Just back from Sri Lanka. Went to Kitekuda at Kappaladi, about 3 hrs drive north of Colombo. You need 4wd to get through the last 5klm of sand track. The place is basic, but that's what we expected, about 1klm from the beach in sand dunes. The food was also very basic with hardly any protien and the same every day. The 'Kite Spot' was a 'Duck Pond' approx 50 x 200 metres and lessons given right in the middle of the pond. There was meant to be 'Surf' which was 30 metres from the duck pond, and this consisted of shore break and 'washing machine' chop. They also wanted Euros 70 to do a downwinder. There are far better places in Aus so my advice is don't go. The place is a complete con and gets a score of 1 out of 10.
Further up the main road at Kalpitya is Dolphin View Eco Resort which has direct access to huge lagoon. This is the spot but don't expect wind 24/7 as you get at least 3 days a week of no wind so stay at home and save the expense.
Did you come across any worthwhile kiting areas over there? I've heard some good reports from there maybe you were'nt in the right area??
Man you sure get around around Dave!
You must have kited more exotic and not so exotic places than anyone I know!
Ive always wanted to go to Ceylon thanks for the travel tips.
Im off to Indo in the morning yay!!

The best place we saw was Dolphin View Eco Resort at Kilpatya. We then went south but its just washing machine chop all the way down South. Negombo was a possible place to kite but the two days we stayed there the wind didn't get above 13knots. South of Galle looked promising with some surf breaks off the beach at Milgram but the bay was only getting the onshone wind in the far corner. At least the beaches were better than anything we saw up the West coast. With the right winds the south would be great. But at the end of the day Aus has better spots hands down.
