Hey guys..

Just thought I'd let you know I've finally finished my new website. There are a couple of shots on there too, of course, and many from Woodies/Perth/Australia so have a little peek and let me know what you think.

Never been a big fan of people referring to themselves in the third person. Would be more personal IMO if you simply stated, "I then travelled to.......where I.......

For what it's worth.

We are talking about the art critic "Sprucemeister" though. He's allowed to refer to himself in the 3rd person.

Sprucester, you are a glutton for punishment. You rag and bag so many people and photos they post etc. etc. and then come on to this site, after leaving the country in one piss bad mood to ask what we all think of your web site........................you have got to be kidding man.

Personally I like the photos you take, but that is as far as I go....take a strong look at your self and don't be surprised when you get abused or red arrowed.....but that is what you want isn't it? Negative attention if you can't get the positive stuff.

Nice web site though....well done, simple, good graphics and nice piccies....there is some talent there...

The format doesn't work for me on 1024x600 netbook screen - half the 'earth' etc is off the screen to the left. Almost every other site works fine, so I'd say it's the way you coded it. Could be something to look at.

'He soon became very popular and people realised his skills were there and wanted to make use of them.'

Did you write that yourself??

Really????

Saffer (It makes me more important to talk about myself in the 3rd person) thinks that sprucemeister wrote it himself based on the final sentence which says "Enjoy the photos, and don't hesitate to contact me for whatever reason.."

Saffer thinks maybe sprucemeister should have got someone to write it for him, and then put their name at the bottom so the sprucemeister doesn't look vain and self obsessed. Saffer agrees that people should be careful about criticising other people's photos when sometimes the person doing the criticising isn't perfect. Saffer does think the sprucemeister has potentially opened himself to some weird and wonderful proposals from some really sick people by saying that people are free to contact him for any reason, although Saffer is not sure on whether this was the sprucemeister's intention.

Saffer also thinks that the sprucemeister should get someone to spell check the webpage because their are basic spelling errors that could be avoided using the wonderful built in technology called "spell checker" found in most programs. Saffer also noticed grammatical errors in the story part, for example, Sprucemeister says "Dave started taking the photographing more and more serious". Saffer thinks unless the sprucemeister intend this to mean that the spruce became had more serious facial expressions, the sprucemeister should probably substitute serious for "seriously".

Perhaps the sprucemeister may now realise that it doesn't take an expert on web technology to criticise a person creating a webpage, much the same as it doesn't take a pro photographer to criticise someone's photos, and perhaps it may be an opportunity for the sprucemeister to learn that there are kinder ways of helping critique someone's work than in a public forum. The sprucemeister may also realise that contrary the popular sprucemeister belief, simply saying "This page sucks" doesn't help the author fix the problems, and perhaps sprucemeister should avoid this method of critiquing photos in future.

Constructive CC. I dont mind the kite shots but they dont appear cutting edge in the slightest. The attempts to get some added elements into the composition distract more then add value. They look alot like shots that you would see from circa 2002 or old kite calendars. They guy in the sky shots are old and done and the rest seem appear too tight with more a journalistic style to them. The one i reckon could make a mag would be the Jo Ciastula shot. Alot of the cropping looks whack as well. A little forced and cramped. Not trying to be harsh but fair dinkum

100% agree - back to piccyshop 101 for the Spruce and his other entities.

The colour and crispness are there, but I don't see any ideas or 'sumpin differant' that catches your eye (or imagination) in the kite section. In fact many of the shots are timed a bit off so as to make hot riders look a bit gumby. Some better attempts at composition in the other sections but wind is average (contrary to the self review).

Hey Dave - you sure are quick (and blunt) to critique other's input so take it on the chinny mate.

10 points for effort but minus 7 points for the self indulgance.

As for talking about oneself in the 3rd person well at least he doesn't have a posed for - then photshopped pic of himself as an avatar.. oh wait..

i thought that a couple of the pics were GREAT!

the one of Jo passing the bar with perth skyline in the background, and the pic of Rowdy on the pointy-rail and the pic of sci throwing buckets with the tanker in the background were very welltimed/classy -exciting shots.

didnt rate the pics that had the foreground objects blurred - probly meant for depth, but i found them too distracting.

Yeah I agree, out of focus foregrounds can be super effective sometimes, however very distracting most of the time.

Some nice shots though

Ladies ladies:) I'm happy to see I can still create a stir in your fine kitesurfing fraternity;)

I didn't post here to "pimp my website", simply to show you some photos. If you don't like them that's fine too, I know alot of you don't like the shots simply because I've taken them and for some reason you have a hatred towards me (even though most of you have never even met me). I appreciate ALL constructive critisism, and that's what I have been giving other people too, not "bagging and ragging". I always enter everything with an open mind, but if I ask "What camera were you using" and I get the answer "A square one" then why should I be humble and helpful? At no point have I ever just said "This photo sucks" or "It's crap" so I don't know what your deal is..

The reason I wrote the story in 3rd person is to make it less amateurish, less "I've done this website myself" kind of thing. Also bare in mind it's a "story" about me and not an autobiography. But since I have had sooo many people complaining about it I will change it. Spelling errors there may be as I wrote it all in one go (and I'm sorry that offended you Saffer, maybe I should have written it in one of the other 5 languages I speak) and was sick of the whole thing. Couldn't find a spell check in the software I was using and frankly didn't care as I just wanted to get it all online at that time. It's easier to update bits and pieces afterwards.

Regarding cropping: I've cropped some images to make them, IMHO, more interesting and to force the eye to look at a certain object first/last. Look in magazines and you'll see many of the shots are cropped or cut to pieces to fit the format/page/layout anyway.

Kiteboy dave: yeah I was afraid there might be some compatibility issues with the width/height. That's something I'll have to think about changing but to be honest, most of todays notebook/desktops have 16:9 screens so probably won't happen.

It is kind of funny too how everyone here disses and dislikes the photos, when the riders themselves love the shots, and have bought several off me for mags, sponsors and promotion.

A good website layout should show well in most formats and browsers. If you use just css instead of the tables, you can get a far more flexible layout. BTW it shows fine on my standard screen (1280x1024 resolution) as well as my widescreen. Some nice photos too.

Yeah I struggled with the tables, they just weren't doing what I wanted them too.. After a while thinking about it I cracked it and finally made it the way I wanted so not gonna re-design it now... and I don't know how to use CSS to get the layout I want so this will have to do..

So you wrote it in the third person to look less amateurish and then didn't spell check it to make it less amateurish? Okay, that makes sense.

Thanks for letting us know that you speak 5 languages. Maybe you can add that to the story somewhere.

You are making wrong assumptions dave. A LOT of laptops still run in smaller resolutions, and the number is growing as mini laptops become more popular. I running the latest lenovo yet I only see half your site.

Fix it. Fix it now.

I knew you'd be back Sproose-Goose.

I saw this post (below) a little while ago and I thought I'd give you the benefit of the Doubt. Considering you created your own thread just to say " You wont, see me again here on Seabreeze"..... But deep down I new you'd be back.
