Heading to Krui in South Sumatra early September for a surf trip, then back to Bali to hook up with the missus

planning on taking my biggest kites, mainly kiting in the surf , 12m Reo & 15m Edge . Has anyone kited in South Sumatra , is there any reliable wind? is it worth taking both kites or just the 15. will there be any wind by Sept in Bali or is it too late in the season ?

sorry for all the questions , appreciate any advice

Cheers

Hello T,
I had a friend SUPer that went to Krui but he did not report about any wind..
September in Bali is a bit late but this year everything is moved back...
Only bring your 15m for sure you will get couple of days.
Maybe you should post on the Surfing forum as there are probably more surfer that went to Krui then kiters.
Bye Jankie

Hey Thevy,

I spent 3 months in 2010 specifically chasing kite/surf in Indo. Btw, my first surfing trip to Indo was in 1980, so I had an idea of what/where to go.

Travelled heaps between Sumatra, Java, Bali & Sumba. Yes, I did kite in south Sumatra but wind was fickle, sessions few and far between.

Your best chance for consistent wind will be in Java, especially west Java but will need to d a lot of homework if wave kiting is your thing.

I'd take your biggest kite and surfing gear.

A kite session in waves will be a bonus.

Jealous, wished I was in Indo now!!!!!

If your going to Indo, leave your kites at home and just go surfin, glassly hollow waves with light offshore winds

Aceh and Timor have wind,

big waves, big kites, light winds and coral reef, sounds fun,

no Im just a bit jelsous,Im not good enough to take on Lakey Peak at low tide on a 6ft day,Id probably loop the kite and get dragged across the dry reef or smashed by the lip and get tangled in the lines knowing my track record in the waves so far

Walking across dry reef with the kite pulling is bad enougth, imagine getting dragged across it,yuk

tonys first rule of wavekiting... always have enough water on the reef to get your fins (body) over it in one piece...

course, like most rules its more of a guideline really

lakey, low tide, 6 foot... hmmm maybe??

Just on Jkarta stopover coming back feom Krui region. Coincidentally having less than average surf season there because of odd weather and some onshore winds that are more S to SW than usual (ie more on/ cross on instead of off crossoff....). Been windy (surfer speak) every day but not windy (kiter speak). Im talking 10ish knots. enough to junk the waves but not convinced of kitability.
id say if your going for kiting... go somewhere else. if your going for surfing.. waves are sick round there but having an average run right now (15/8/13).
Fk im bored.
Satu lagi.
