hi my wife and i are heading to africa for honeymoon - looking at 4 weeks. Hopefully at least 2 weeks kitesurfing and then 2 weeks on safari, victoria falls, table top mountain, gorillas in Rwanda.
Any advice on places to kite in africa?
best area for kiting in Capetown?
Muizenberg contact Patrice he owns Surfstore Africa he also has accommodation very close to Muizenberg beach.
Looked them up and sent them a msg - have you done SA previous? Any info would be appreciated ie where to go in October, is it ok to rent gear? Etc where is the waves and where is the flat water
I am ex Cape Town (left 2013) and you are not going in the best time of year for Kitesurfing. Season is November to April but mainly mid December to Feb.
Muzienberg.... not a fan. Dirty water, cars get broken into at the beach and not to mention it is near the little seal island they shot air Jaws. (sharks launching to catch prey). NW or SE you can kite Big Bay, blouberg, etc. Also good on SE is witsand (good waves). Flatwater go to Langebaan in SE or NW.
Awesome spot for southerly wind and all time place is Strand.
Best area that time of year is Northern KZN. Cape Vidal awesome kiting in the middle of game reserve.
I did go to Capetown and was looking for advice beforehand. Patrice was very helpful this was during the king of the air Feb 2015. Not much wind the week I was there. I hired a twintip from Patrice and stayed at a three bedroom house in a secure complex that belongs to Patrice.
That time of year your best to head Kwazulu Natal for Kiting, not guaranteed wind but there will be a westerly or easterly some days. Both work well just need to drive either up or down the coast, and there will be waves. But for a scenic holiday Cape Town is the place to visit. Durban has some of the best down winder conditions, guaranteed swell every time.
Namibia to the north, specifically Luderitz. The world speed records for sailing are all set there around this time in the Fall. Your chances of Beaufort 5-7 are over 60% and its flat water. Aside from nuking strong wind, the air density is very high and as such, wind for wind, you will want smaller sizes. In warm tropical Carribean I like my 17m at 18 kts. In Cape Town area, I prefered my 11m at those same 18 knots as the air density makes it feel like there are steel support beams under your kite. http://www.windguru.cz/int/historie_statsw.php?odmes=1&odrok=2003&domes=8&dorok=2016&ntype=p&stattype=2&getspot=&id_georegion=2&id_zeme=516&id_region=0&mis_spot=107373&search=&id_typspot%5B1%5D=1&id_typspot%5B2%5D=2&id_typspot%5B6%5D=6&id_typspot%5B4%5D=4&id_typspot%5B3%5D=3&id_typspot%5B5%5D=5&id_typspot%5B10%5D=10&id_typspot%5B7%5D=7&id_typspot%5B8%5D=8&id_typspot%5B9%5D=9&id_typspot%5B11%5D=11&mis_fav=0&mis_fav_last=248586&id_spot=107373&odeslano=1&model=gfs&gl_cvselect=&glPrintable=0&gl_csv=0
From Dec-March, Tableview on the NW side of Cape Town is the ideal. Talk to the locals for other spots during Oct altho its generally not the best time for CPT.
Go Big! :D
Honestly, as someone who's dragged kite gear around SA and elsewhere, I'd strongly consider whether you need the kiting element in your trip, and if so maybe you could hire gear for a few days here or there rather than lug your own for the whole trip?
I love SA and southern africa in general. Proposed to my wife watching the sun go down from a mountain top in Solitaire, Namibia. We did 2 months just in SA and Namibia on that trip
There's so much to do there that you could easily fill that 2 weeks with other stuff, with maybe a few days hire kiting to scratch that itch.
