Shinn Monk 4 months old. Perfect condition. But when I edge hard it tends to break and if I turn hard will slip and chatter leaving me heading straight ahead.
Only been kiting for 7 months now so possibly a revised stance/technique is required?
Any help appreciated.
John
I can load up the edge on my Monk more than any other board I've owned/ridden and have never had a problem?
ok i get ya. "braking"
i had exactly the same problem when i first got mine.
my old board was a nobile 555 and was very very different to the monk.
it feels like a balancing act when you first get on it... too much back foot and it just stops,
too much front and it gets near the center and becomes slippery as the fins are not engaged.
stick with it and it wont take long to find the balance and you will be riding it without thinking. you will also come to like how the board can be spun around in a transition etc.
very good board and like Chris says, once you get the hang of it, the board just dont let go.
try changing your fins
i got the dundee and am quite enjoying messing around with different fin set-ups
currently going with 43 on the toeside and 53 on heel side.
makes a big difference to how you can switch it around and how it boosts.
( my local shinn dude is happily loaning me fins so no cost so far )(Thanks Phil)
i don't have this board. But it sounds like you have a hunkering for more finnage. Big fins certainly hold a lot more edge than smaller ones.
Nothing to do with fins on the monk, especially with the small increment options, widen you stance on the settings, and open the stance settings on your pads to open your feet, so your adopting a similar foot position as to riding a skateboard ,,
to add to my last post its certainly technique, the monk has a very aggressive outline, I use this as much as I use my fins, itll grip harder than most boards in powered conditions, but when flattened out will skid around like your on ice, when your riding skills and time on the board increases you can use it to your advantage, its a ripper
I ride this stance in our winter onshores for a few klms and it doesn't miss a beat, a lower parked kite will also help engage your edge, the higher in the window the more the kites pulling you from your edge
