Every once in a while you need to self land.

The last fuel i saw on a 5th line in those conditions went about 20m up.
no way you'll catch it or your board will stay there.
perhaps on some other kind of 5th but don't go recommending that.
hand over hand thru your hook is the only way to get something back.
but at 50knots i wouldn't want to be seeing the thing.

in 50 knots there is no way you would even get your board to stay in the sand, or the sand to stay on your board

Would work, but make sure you have the whole board covered with tonnes of wet sand and the leading edge (closest to the wind) is buried not facing up to get flipped.
By the way what kite are you flying in the alleged 50 knots?
And how much pull does the kite have when on the safety?

I've got the latest <insert kite name> 9m 2008 model and I'll have you know I regularly take out my <insert kite name> in 50 knots here and I don't even touch the depower strap so I reckon it has at least <insert exaggeration here> knots left in the kite. I'm contemplating getting the 7m <insert kite name> so I can go down to Tas and go for big air when the 70 knot winds hit there, but the damn pilots don't want to land planes in that wind.
Haha I have seen you in there(your kite at least) a few times now! Chris is overseas now - he can't help you get there again.

I have used a 6m wipika indy and been powered. These days I have a 5m storm kite in my NEW quiver. This will be more comfortable than the 6m.
When its strong the kite will rag heaps. Correctly tuned the pull is minimal and a wedged board will hold. If its windy use your brains and put more sand on.
I dont recommend rigging up and kiting in this strength.
But if you get caught out. This is how you do it.

If your kite flys high up into the sky - shorten the distance your bar sides away. I call it Neutralizer 5 stopper ball length. Horizontal pull and your board will wedge in the sand.
Your kite needs to be tuned with no chance of making a negative angle of attack, if you get my drift.

Well I used to self launch using the 5th in forte wind.
But got driven down the beach around 50 meters.
Self launching takes experience and someone needs to show you.
I will self launch on the beach using the 5th up to 30knts.
I dont recommend a novice launching on the beach with it,
You'll be right on the water relaunching in what ever wind your willing to ride unhooked in.

if things go wrong, you've got a 2.7/3.5 kg projectile. Does my WAKSA insurance cover that?
Another way would be to pull your 5th walk to your bar and wind the 5th line only with all other lines completely slack.
You could gather the 5th like Dave says but its a lot of work with the kite flying around.
Better off securing rig to the board then walking down and flipping the kite over to fully land it. Pack up is then a standard proceedure.

Well Im not the expert. But I did write the Wipika manuel when 5 lines were brought out. I think it was published it in that one too.
50 knots? i still really don't think so, but if you've got a super amazing (insert name here) kite, then I guess it's possible, because you can do anything with those kites [}:)]
I'll make sure I take a bobcat with me to throw a little bit of sand on my board.

For a long time now I have seen people T bagging not knowing what to do? People have been talking about it on kookforum too. Need to lay it straight so at least the Auzzies can save themselves.
If you have found your self overpowered standing alone in the middle of the beach. This is what you do and it works in very strong wind.

What a load of crap.... 50 knots!
Once wind gets over 25 knots there is only one way to self land IMO, and that is to flag the kite to one line and drop it in the water....all these other methods are possible but associated with high risk of something going wrong.
best way to land a kite at 50knts is just talk loads of bull sh!t at the kite. After a few minutes the BS sticks to the kite and it auto-lands.
Or just cut the lines on your NEW kite. Then just buy another NEW kite and try and post NEW everytime you NEW you probably shouldn't have read the NEWs that day.

You guys are either three parts crazy, or full of it. Do NOT tie your board to your kite in this amount of wind.
I had a large kite laying on the ground in 50 knots one time at Windang with only struts inflated with one wingtip into the wind and it took three of us to hold it down whilst we were pelted with stones whipped up from the wind over the gravel in the carpark.
Boards blow away in 35 knots and even with sand on it I still wouldn't trust it. Doesn't take that much wind to get under the board and flip it, loosing the kite and creating absolute carnage downwind.
Sorry Pornstar, but I find this thread pretty irresponsible to begin with. ONLY safe way is to flag your kite by releasing the bar and winding the 5th around your harness hook as a friction device, then go hand over hand 'til you reach the LE.

I agree with Gruezi and Kitehard.
It may work sometimes, but when it goes wrong, your board becomes one big missile! In 50 knots it could do some serious damage.
Totally agree with Kitehard. Do not even think about it let alone trying it. Imagine both board and kite flying downwind at speed.....
The winding method Kitehard describes also works on Bow/Hybrid kites. It will be demonstrated at the "Safety Seminar" in Brisbane next weekend. It is a method we teach all students and must be learnt as a basic skill. Anyone interested please see events listing and register to attend.

No worries, Im not concerned how you do it as long as you're not looking like its your first time in the water with no mates to catch your kite.
There are many different ways with many different results.
This is the best quickest way in strong winds.

Next time its really strong
-Try it the way pictured above. I recommend tuned 5th line only tied to your board. Reride ring might work but I dont recommend it.
-Also try working down one of your lines method, as mentioned by gruezi, Kitehard, padi and others.
