Brighton / Scarborough kiters are invited to meet with WAKSA representatives to discuss a strategy to ensure that kiting at Scarborough is as safe as possible and has minimal effect on other water users.

A number of local kiters are currently working on a list of guidelines that may assist and are also liaising with council and the Surf Club.

Rather than debating the pros and cons of various suggestions in a public forum, we stongly suggest that you send any suggestions that you would like raised to waksa@waksa.org.au

You do not have to be a waksa member to be a part of this action group.
ALL kiters are most welcome to have their say or just listen in to what is going on.
So if Brighton / Scarborough is your local please come along to the meeting at :-
7.30pm Tuesday 2nd December 2008
Airborne Kitesurfing
Unit 4 11 Howe Street
Osborne Park

This is a meeting to set up a set of guidelines that ,we all agree, must be adhered to . The most obvious being no kiting between the flags .

I don't believe we should address any issues like right of way amongst ourselfs or who has priority on a wave . Although important these issues don't threaten our access .

I think we need to keep it as simple as possible and the rules to a minimum . That way we have a better chance of everybody sticking to them .

Just a suggestion. May help guide the meeting and our future actions. I've emailed a pdf to WAKSA also.

I dont think Airbourne (no offense intended) 7.30 PM is the place this meeting should be happening at (dinner, kids, work commitments etc).

In my opinion it should be down at brighton on a windy day Probably a sunday as was originally planned when most of the "crew" are there. allot of us made the effort to be there that time and for some reason it didnt happen??

I know I am coming in at the 11th hour but I have been away and just got back yesterday,

this notice was given on the 27th - 5 days is not allot of time to prepare anything on such an important issue

If this meeting goes ahead as planned I think it would be fair to come up with a set of "Proposed" guidelines that can be be then debated.

I wont be able to make it tonight, I have to work.
Id suggest the "guidelines' would be pretty basic and common sense.

Like....1. Dont kite through the flags, or just upwind so when you drop your kite it goes through.

2. Dont rig up between all the beach goers. The weekends are crazy now and there are heaps of people on the beach. Go down to the next path south and you will find room.

That would about cover it.

The easy way to achieve this is to do downwinders. There is plenty of beach with no one around and it spreads out the crowd. You dont have to worry so much about your car getting smashed windows by parking in one of the spots along the way. Thats why most of the locals do just that over summer.

Everyone wins....

Points taken about keeping it simple.

However, I believe if we are to be successful for (what I've gathered to be) the three goals here: 1. Continued beach access, 2. Safety for all and 3. Social / community aspects, then I think we'll need more of a 'strategy', of which the guidelines will be a part.

In the proposal, guidelines come under kiter liaison. Even if that's all we do, there is still a need for some policy on how to distribute those guidelines, enforce them, remedy when they are broken and other beach users are affected, promote the fact that we have guidelines to ensure access and keep council, slsa, etc on our side.

I'm not WAKSA by the way, just a concerned beach user. I've got other personal commitments I'm trying to adapt for tonight because I believe that:
1. There'll never be 'enough notice' or 'the perfect meeting time'
2. Giving up some time and effort here is going to be worthwhile
3. We need a collective community effort

Hope to see as many of us there as possible.

Carlbevo, Coreyb and all who can't make it, can I please suggest you email WAKSA on add above with your suggestions so you'll still support and contribute to the proposals.

You'll then be 'in the loop' on any collective decisions which need to be made after!

Bugger!!

Had my babysitter fall through at the last minute and couldn't make it.

Hope all went well and a few issues were thrashed out - with the minimum bloodshed!

Any news from this meeting yet or is it in the mix still?

Yes, as soon as I type up the minutes tonight, send them out to the attendees for comment over the following 24 hours then make any adjustments necessary, I will post them here for further comment before we finalise them in two weeks time.

It looks... inevitable... Mr. Anderson.

I've got a feeling that if I don't get some more water time soon I'm going to go postal. [}:)]

After the meeting on Tuesday night and a respectable amount of email back and forth since, the following draft guidelines were decided on between the 15 people who showed up. The Scarborough Users Group invites positive, constructive comments on them before finalising and publishing them in two weeks time.

Guidelines for Kitesurfing at Scarborough

Be aware that Brighton Beach is an advanced location. It has strong currents, rips and dumping surf.

1. Stay away from surf lifesaving flags; keep at least 50m upwind and downwind and stay at least 200m out to sea.

2. Stay away from the surf club area when Lifesavers are training, and on busy days when swimmers spill out from between the flags.

3. Don’t launch and land on the grassed area, and don’t walk up or down the path with your kite in the air.

Note: Anyone doing downwinders from City Beach to Scarborough must not kite between the groynes at City Beach, and must stay out of the surf club area at Floreat (marked by white buoys) if the flags are up.

Guidelines for Kitesurfing at Scarborough

Be aware that Brighton Beach is a advanced location shared beach. It has strong currents, rips and dumping surf. It is recommended that a high level of competence is needed.

1. Stay away from surf lifesaving flags; keep at least 50m upwind and downwind and stay at least 200m out to sea. Penalties apply

2. Stay away from the surf club area when Lifesavers are training, and on busy days when swimmers spill out from between the flags.

3. Don’t launch and land on the grassed area, and don’t walk up or down the path with your kite in the air.

Note: Anyone doing downwinders from City Beach to Scarborough must not kite between the groins at City Beach, and must stay out of the surf club area at Floreat (marked by white buoys) if the flags are up.

No one takes notice of "advanced location", just as no one takes notice of the "dangerous rips and under currents" you can see on all beaches as disclaimers.
