I've always wondered how many k's one actually travel when down-winding to scarbs or Trigg. So on Saturday I pushed the phone into a waterproof pouch, and turned on one of the many GPS tracking apps - runkeeper pro.
A bit nervous about the phone, but the bag worked a treat.
So here are a few interesting stats (how I rode anyway)
the ~5km downwinder translatest to 17.5km of distance travelled point to point
Time taken, 1 hr 9 mins (which includes launching and landing). Average speed 15km/h. Max avg speed over 1 min ~38km/h
The log is exportable into Google Earth or industry standard GPS log (.GPX).
For those lucky ones who got into the rotto race, this could be a fun thing to do. I sadly registered too late.
You can see the stats here... runkeeper.com/user/Coertdup/activity/60368505
this is quite interesting grang. ive also wondered. where did u get the waterproof pouch/case for the phone? and did it come with any guarantee?
Cool, I have a waterproof pouch for my iphone but have only ever used it with my ipod whilst SUPing or the phone when on a boat but now that it is out of contract I might download an app and give it a go.
Thats a lot of kitesurfing for an old fart like yourself Granny G, next time do the outline "I love you" and get your wife to open google earth, she will let you go kitesurfing everyday!
Check out www.nextdestination.com.au for waterproof gear. I have their keymaster pouch & it's excellent ![]()
This company was at Kitestock 2 years ago not sure if they were there this year.
have you tried Every Trail? I've got run keeper and never really liked it. Here a mountain bike I did a couple of days ago.

Looks like next destination may be no more but the product line they were selling is
called the aquapac & comes in heaps of different varieties............phones, keys cameras etc.
surf sail australia has them as do..............

We have them at AKS, ION waterproof bags and headphones in stock, we have used them on SUP's but might have to try them on a downwinder on the kite in DM lets me sneak a kite in this arvo.
Runkeeper app works great plots speed, time, produces a google map plot, posts it all to FB, and plays your favourite tunes, just don't select you daughters playlist by mistake and have justin beaver and selena gomez, especially if your in a race! Dooh!
Hi guys...
I use this for my iphone4, will work with any of course. While I have headphones as well I havent used them because I can just speak through the case and it works fine. It's not like I do my social work while kiting :)http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/H2O-Audio-Amphibx-Large-Waterproof-Armband-WA1-5A1-Swimming-iPhone-Touch-iPod-/170668091389?pt=UK_MP3_Player_Accessories_Armbands&hash=item27bc9c67fd
I went out yesterday and I wsa waiting for a mate's call to meet up for a kite. Got the call and had a chat while on the water - cool as.

here is a session I did one arvo at the local using my garmin 310xt watch and garmin connect. With a just a small sample of the info that is provided on the side.
Kite Surf SUP - (KSS) have just finished testing & trialing a new range of waterproof carry cases. The first ones we tried failed - not often but even once is too much.
Impressive results this time but still scary as taking ur real-life phone out with you that first time.
Should be getting them onto the shelf in about a week.
had one of these for a while on a the boat but found out the hard way they are not very waterproof, i suggest a pelican case..
Sorry for the late reply - I am interstate.
I used a generic waterproof phone bag (the kind with a tripple zip lock wiht fold over clip). Can't comment on which one works really well.
One thing that worked well was to put the phone under a spring suit ~ between the shoulder blades on my back. This was the phone stays above the harness, has best satelite line of site and away from the moving bits.... I also tied the phone string to the wetsuit string, but the phone never moved anyway.
Initially I put the string around my neck and this was very uncomfortable.
Some cool apps in the post above. Will have a look!
Hey Chaps,
I haven't used the headphones either because of the same reason, risking tangles.
But as far as waterproof - not a problem after a few hours of riding and quite few dumps. I wasn't holding back and got wet as usual since I mostly ride waves now.
It doesn't get in the way at all but each to his own. I will most certainly recommend the product as mine hasn't failed at all. I am on call 50% of my kiting time and getting a buzz on your arm from a vibrating call beats having to leave my phone with someone ashore and relying on them to get my attention when a call comes through.
Did a downwinder the other day and it worked a treat, but perhaps not recommended if you want to gasbag ![]()
Cheers.

As far as music goes, i got a waterproof holder of an ipod nano which you can put on your arm or ON YOUR HAT, which is the best as the wires only need to go a few inches to your ears.
Works well, but I don't use it often, because it is a bit dangerous not being able to hear other things going on.
GPS Action Replay is a handy bit of gear for statistically analysing sailing track data.
You can include a satellite image if you want but I haven't on this computer.
The statistics it reports are a bit specific to speed sailing though, so I'm reading the raw data out of the .gpx file into a home grown database to get ones a bit more specific to me.
I'm wearing a Garmin Foretrex 401 on my arm. Not the safest place for it, but I haven't lost it yet (even in the big crash). It has been good in the L2L training sessions with a fullscreen speed display - I can see how fast I'm going at any given time and adjust my technique accordingly.
Lifeproof.com case looks the goods.
there is some cheap junk on ebay.. dont know if its worth the risk.
Remember Iphone is not GPS its Agps - which means its uses triangulation of three mobile towers to give you a position, so no need to have it on your back, the satellite is not picking it up, sorry. needs reception to work.
Have a H20 audio case, use it every kite, keeps the water out of your ears, sound is good, bass is better once they have a bit of water in them, have it strapped on to my arm but gets annoying if its too tight, just chuck the cables down your shirt like in the gym and never have to worry about them, can get different types of ear fittings to find one that stays in your special ears. hardly ever falls out. never had a tangle. the new nano is a bit hard to touch but its well worth the coin!
have a surfing cap with 2 gig in the brim and little ear buds out the side, but sounds tinny, 50/50 when it usb's into the computer but settings are real simple with controls in the peak.
cheers drew
