i have stayed there surfed/kite a few times now at nemberala, nemb left reef out front has good setup but american can get grumpy with kiters, wind is often dodgy and fickle with no out if you have hassle. boa right can be good , but mostly next fishing village south beautiful ocean , people are great.

Nembrella www.google.com/maps/@-10.8875393,122.8183489,1687m/data=!3m1!1e3

All of the the breaks to the west and south are offshore with the trade winds. The wind is predominantly from the east and north east, very rarely you get a south east but it all changes during the day and the strength too like most of indo. South east wind gives side shore access to the south and a bit of the west breaks www.google.com/maps/@-10.9213615,122.8160821,2598m/data=!3m1!1e3. In May the trades can have patches of no wind, but when wind sets in it quickly gets up to 20-25knots. I hear in July the wind gets over 35knots with guys only using 6m kites. The American runs Nembrella Beach Resort and is a really nice guy. Like all surf breaks kiters shouldn't get in the way of surfers. If you can kite cross off or offshore you should enjoy it, the wind comes over relatively flat land and has a long flat reef, that you can often walk over, to smooth it out. To the east there is an onshore beach www.google.com/maps/@-10.9228186,122.8586138,1781m/data=!3m1!1e3 that gets a wind swell, which I hear is good when the winds get much stronger. There is some reefs to the far north east www.google.com/maps/@-10.7043829,123.3005366,13182m/data=!3m1!1e3 which look good on google maps, but the village roads near the coast can quickly turn into rock laden disasters and take a great amount of skill and time to get though. The east side doesn't get any swell until it is big as well. Even Boa www.google.com/maps/@-10.9421336,122.850569,782m/data=!3m1!1e3 which should be kiteable is often flat and offshore on north easters. Most of Rote gets relatively small swells compared to the rest of indo and is highly dependent on the direction of the swell. I was told a break to the north near nembrella on the west side lines up with the wind well, the islands also look good but not many locals have powered boats...so you would probably have to pay a lot or make friends. Almost no places have any signs advertising accommodation, because the local government taxes them for it if they do. Most of the places near main area on the beach are accommodation and also most places with walls, you need to ask around and not many people speak english, but May is not busy at all because the swells aren't good. Rocking up with no previous bookings is not a problem like most places in indo, as long as it's not the national holiday time.

I don't know where I said that? I think it gets some of the strongest wind in indo and consistent too. I don't know where else you are going to get 25knots in May most days. The offshore can be all over the place close to shore and riding waves offshore needs particular gear and skill, and even then may not be what most people want. The wave setups for side shore are not really happening from what I could see. Savu/sabu looks much better for wave kiting but is seemingly more remote than Rote, I have had advice to take some food :-/ Rote is nearly remote enough for me in indo.

Spent a few weeks there a few years ago. Before my kiting days.

Great long waves, very gentle. Ill find some pics and put them up here later.

If you want waves and surf, id hit Lakey Peak.

Good luck with the transport marfia.

Rote and that whole area is consistently windy from May, and as mentioed, this year even April. I have seen 38 knots there (measured), at the northern end. Have poked around a fair bit most of the islands around there including savu, rai jau and Dana, during the easterlies, and am yet to find a really good setup. Plenty of average ones, but nothing like Lakey. Nearly all the name breaks are either direct offshore, or close to it. Truly awesome part of the world tho and well worth a visit.
