After being actively involved in this event for the past 3 years, I am absolutely gutted to find I'm unable to participate as a kiter this year (simply can't be in two places at once & really bummed about it...)

It's great to see that WAKSA is continuing with this event & I know that the folks @ Redkite are hugely appreciative of the funds that kiters & their families, friends & supporters.

I'd encourage everyone to get on board for this event - it's a great way for the kiting community to be seen making a really valuable and positive contribution to a great charity.

Thanks to all those supporting & sponsoring the event.....(thanks Jen)

Hey guys, I've registered for the downwinder and am itching to get started fundraising as time is very short.

There is a problem with the Redkite registration, I assume I should join the 'WAKSA team' when I register, but there is no team showing up to join for WAKSA when I try to do so.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what to do?

As you know, time is very short for fundraising, so hopefully we can sort something out really quickly.

Cheers
Matt

EDIT:

OK, I think I've figured it out, but crikey, that redkite website, it's a pretty counter-intuitive process.
I'll just use the excuse it's my first time doing this :)

UP DATE*****

We have decided to postpone Redkite untill after Kitestock 2013. We are looking for a date in early March.

Unfortunatly there have been some issues with getting the required permissions and November/December is already crowded with other events. State WAVE comp, the Course Racing series and Light House to Leighton.

The good news is we have something to look forward to later in the season and it gives more chance to raise money for this great cause. Check with your employer some companies will match what ever you raise.

If any one wants to help in organising this event or help out on the event please email waksa@waksa.org.au

Damn, that's a big postpone, I understand that it must have been a big decision to make, but still going by the reasons given, you must have known for a while that you'd be postponing this event

And it also makes me wonder why it was given the go at such a late stage then.

What would you advise I tell everyone I've emailed and FB'd for support now?

A more solid date for the reschedule would be nice so I don't sound like a d*ck telling everyone 'sometime in March'.
Should I cancel my fundraising page and reactivate it when the official date has been set?

As for help being needed;
My advise to you would be to, instead of putting out a general call for help, post up what help you actually need, you may get a better response.
And asking for the help much earlier would have helped too.

Oceanfire,

it's a major bummer for the WAKSA crew to have to pull the pin on this event - at least we've all been told now, a few weeks out...two yrs ago we had to pull the pin on the event because of weather forecasts - 3 or so days out from the event.

The key issue for everyone to focus on is that regardless of if the DW is held or not, is that all $$ raised so far, or between now & when the event is held, go to a really great cause - supporting kids & young people with cancer - it's hugely important that we don't forget that.

Thumbs up to the WAKSA crew for letting everyone know NOW - and not 3 or so days out as we had to in 2010 - (trust me, 3 days notice to cancel an event = huge heartache & pain). This gives everyone time to raise even more money for Redkite - what the event is all about in the first place.

And on a personal level, it means this year I get to do the event - something I'm fkn stoked about now....

Well of course cancelling due to weather sucks, but it's something we are prepared for in this sport, you wouldn't catch me whinging about that.

I'm just suspicious of the timing on this one, it was obviously in trouble of proceeding way before now.
If November /December being crowded with events is the main reason for it being cancelled, then it seems a bad decision to even have entertained the notion of holding it now.

I'm new to the whole association thing, but it all seems to be behind a veil of secrecy, I made an offer of help a while ago but got no response; I know I'm not the most ideal person to help, but I was willing to try to work something out.

All I was saying previously, is that posting for the specific help that may be needed could get a better response and be more time effective instead of answering individual emails.
People would have time to think about what they can do instead of feeling like they're on the spot by emailing directly.

I guess the disappointment is amplified for me as I've been looking forward to doing this event for a couple of years now.

And yes, I would like to continue fundraising for such a good cause, I just want to know what to tell people, about the timing, that I'm canvassing for donations.

Ok, it's official, I need to get new eyes.

I see there was a thread posted by WAKSA asking for volunteers

Apologies guys, I guess you didn't get enough of a response.

I'm too rookie for anything else, but I'll definitely help with the set up and set down of the marquees if I still have time to participate in the downwinder.

What about the rest of you WA guys?

No love?
