From reading a couple of posts on SB, it appears that a number of local kiters might be considering a private crossing from Rottnest to Leighton and follow the kiters participating in the inaugural Red Bull Lighthouse to Leighton race next Saturday 11th Decemer 2010.
WAKSA would request that anyone considering doing this to NOT do so.
WAKSA has spent 9 months working with a range of stakeholders including Royal Life Saving Society, Fremantle Port Authority, Dept of Transport, Rottnest Island Authority, and many sponsors to get this event up and running. As part of the planning process a conscious decison was made by the WAKSA committee to limit number of participants in the inaugural event so that we could ensure that the event was in fact 'manageable' at an organisational level, and so that we could show stakeholders such as FPA & Dept of Transport that a successful event with this number of participants would allow for a future growth in participant numbers.
On this basis, risk management plans and safety plans based on 50 kiters have been written, submitted, and approved by the necessary authorities. We have sourced volunteer safety/rescue boats to support 50 kiters - but not for any additional kiters. Anyone conducting a solo or private crossing next Saturday potentially puts themselves, the 50 kiters participating and the future of this sensational event at risk.
WAKSA knows and appreciates the level of excitement this event has created amongst local kiters. We ask for your understanding and support by not conducting private/unauthorised crossings. Support your Association, the participating kiters and the future of this event by coming down to Leighton Beach, from 1.00pm and cheer the 50 lucky kiters as they cross the finish line next Saturday. A successful event in 2010 will go a long way towards an even bigger event in 2011.
Thank you for your support and we hope to see many of you at Leighton Beach next Saturday.
The WAKSA Crew.
Damn, might have to refund the 70 Euro backpacking kiters I sold tickets for $100 each for an epic crossing adventure with full boat support and professional vids and photos.![]()
I think WAKSA owes me some sort of compensation for my losses,,,,,,,like maybe a spot on the crossing????
Surely they wouldnt notice if there were 51 people![]()

Agreed!!! Dont be silly people and risk losing this awesome event.
I remember when we had Gravity Games and KPWT in WA! Such fun events, hopefully we have more in the near future ![]()
I'll promise not to do it if WAKSA guarantees me a spot next year[}:)]. BTW, what were the selection criteria?
I wonder how many people registered to be a WAKSA member in the off-chance they get a start in the race.
I know I was one after a few years in the wilderness! Didn't get in though.
Nice way to get the numbers up at least...
