Hi Guys,
Last week on the Gold Coast I got out to catch the 25-30knt southerly's, got a chance to boost around for the first time. Below is a short vid would appreciate any tips and technique advise please ?
What size Kite were you on? Seems like your redirecting the kite too far across the window, resulting in the big swing under the kite and not a lot of height.
That spot looks fun!
I'm a strapped surf guy so I don't have a lot to offer you, but one thing I would do is instead of boosting off those whitewater waves, ollie over those and blast off the next wave when it's just pitching out to break. You get a lot more hold because the ramp will be smooth, and the pitching lip should give you a better/higher jump. I'm not that experienced on twin tips so if I'm way off don't beat me up too bad!
its a 10m air rush DNA, I was kinda doing that on purpose yanking the kite back to 10/11 cause it felt good to get the G force pull, but am I doing that at the expense of height ?

Sweet. I love the feeling too.
I don't think your getting much hight because your not loading enough. Maybe next time try and load up and pop a little harder. In 30knots on a 10m you should be going huge!!
these are like 3-4 second jumps. can quite easily be done in far less wind. need to work on your......jumping.... well kite control/board control/timeing/bodyposition....theres quite alot of useful videos out there explaining how jumping works and how to do it. once you get your head around the whole process it becomes a bit easier.
thanks for makeing the edit only show the jumping and not anything else. or music and ****. straight to the point training edits is where it is at
Looked like quite a bit of swell hey.
Further to the advice above, not sure if you are goofy or natural stance in preference, but sometimes when I have done a bigger jump, or am flying under kite but swinging off axis a bit, I'll rotate slightly to land toe side and/or ride out the opposite direction (like a jump transition). This seems to help me handle a mistimed one.
Most of yours do look a bit mistimed. Don't worry, it will come, keep practising.![]()
It's hard to see from the vid, but let your bar all the way out at the same time as you turn upwind to add load whilst sending your kite, then you'll get a bucket load of boost sheeting all the way in. If you're scared of heights sheet out a bit before you get too high

Looks like your boosting off the white wash often. If you can boost off the wave lip. That gives you more height.

That's how you do small boosts... that puts the kite further towards the edge of the window and gives you less line tension. You want the bar only around half way out as you send it max and then all the way in as you release your load and pop. And yes, as Plummet said, go off the peak of a wave not whitewash.
Darren from one of the Perth kite shops wrote an epic essay on boosting, this is still the best advice I've read:
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/Newbies-Tips-Tricks/How-to-get-HUGE-AIR/
I printed this out and read it at the beach daily for a few months.
I now feel like I don't really want to jump much higher because if I don't land well I will almost certainly die. ![]()

Thanks for linking that! It should be a sticky.
I've been doing everything he says not to do. No wonder I either go nowhere, or crash.
Back to the drawing board.
Couple of things..... As wishy said.100% but this only describes one (the most consistent) method for of going huge.
There's a vid "ss kiteboarding" or something google it. Shannon best says something like " you need to ride around as fast and as powered as possible with the bar sheeted out". Then when you pull the trigger you get all this lift". This is really important (for most kites).
Looking at the vid it looks like you have a little depower pulled. If your bar is Over sheeted well fine..... But generally to go truely massive you want your kite in its sweet spot. If you have to pull your trim strap to hold the kite, you are much better off being on a smaller board or a smaller kite. Hence guys like Dimitri talk about kite and board selection. From what I seen you had lots of room to be more powered (bar wise).
As many have said before, it's all physics. Speed = Power all things being equal .(load, pop and kite) so maintaining your speed And the kites speed is the key.
Some other things to try. As a test don't be afraid to come off your edge to ride slightly downwind to maintain your speed/momentum. You do this after the redirect, there's a point where edging hard the whole way to jump actually slows your board speed down a little. You can keep this speed or indeed excellarate slightly to get more line tension at pop. It's really really really hard to time, but with practice becomes easier. It's using this trick copied from one of Liam's vids that I feel I go the highest on. Not the most consistent as I said, but When you get it right, Hang on! The first few times you will panic and push the bar out on the way up.
To sum up, physics, gear selection and technique. The later in my opinion is adjusted slightly for each kite to maximise line tension.
one thing I will say landing (crashing) in the aerated white wash is 10x softer then unbroken flat water
I think I can see why you arent boosting to the moon - it looks like a Switch bar so I assume its a Switch kite ...........
Next time start your downwinder north of narrow neck or ride to the bech walk and launch again,no TT doing down winders shall be permitted !
I practice my boosts in medium wind days , by working on technique - not worrying about height too much. ( or at all )
Edge like mad and push off with the knees with the kite fairly high ( ie. 11 back to 1 only) and my goal is to land in my own wake/whitewash!
This way I have actually drifted backwards slightly or ideally maintained the exact same spot that I launched from.
usually I also land very gently with bugger all forward momentum, I pretty much am left standing in the one spot waiting for the kite to pull me along again.
This way i have put all my energy into UPWARDS movement with as little drift as possible.
This is not about height on these jumps, just playing with technique, That's board control and kite placement
Low flat jumps like yours in the video are because your board is flat on the water when you took off and you had not enough tension in the kite canopy
IMHO
You want to be going as fast as possible, if your after hangtime, and use the ramp / lip as much as possible to maintain speed while launching into the air, almost without a carve up. - Sheet fully in. Keep the kite pointing the way your going / or into wind.
If you want height, launch the same as above, but jam the kite back to 11 oclock, then turn it down, and bar in middle powered.
I think your are performing pretty well and nice, your type of boost is more like going downwind and travelling a lot in horizontal distance, your height is quite good, but if you want more height you should load a little more (practice load and pop, a trick that last less than a second) to transfer the energy vector pointing to the zenith, but I repeat you are performing nice...
Where did you put your camera? Not a bad angle. looks like its on your chin
Its a mouth mount which you bite down on, when used with a go pro session its very comfortable and you cant feel the camera weight.
With a camera in your mouth there's no way you are powered enough to boost to a decent height.
You should be fearing for your life, and terrified to put anything near your teeth!

Or biting so hard you break through the mount!
