I have potentially got a new job in Port Macquarie. I will be moving from Western Australia. What is the kitesurfing and kite surfing comunity like there?

Whats the town like to live in?

feedback from this community will make a big impact as to making a decision about if I should move.

Thanks

I live a bit further North, but have friends down that way. Great town, plenty of kiting and surfing options, can get busy at holiday times, bit like where i live, but when those damn gringo's leave and everything goes back to cruisey coastal town mode life is super sweet.

I love that your career is driven by your kiting requirements!

I lived there about 15 yrs ago, was the first in the town to kite. Flat water options are pretty limited but the waves are great.

Mate just don't get your hopes up for the wind. Western Australia is a world class spot... NSW I reckon you would struggle to find a single person coming here on a kiting holiday. That being said, its still nice to get out, and the waves are 10x better than the west coast so bring your surf boards.

I'd agree that some parts of WA are definitely world class, in summer. In winter though, which is a long time, not so good. East Coast fires all year round, except for the late autumn doldrums along the NSW and SE Qld coasts. Southerlies happen frequently over winter, and there are heaps of places that work in Southerlies including around PM.
East Coast over summer is very reliable, just not quite as windy as WA. Mid to Northern NSW coast is epic for wind and waves.

Such a good point about year round, Winter winds are nasty but kiteable nonetheless. No way is Summer here nearly as reliable as Perth. East coast is 2-4 times per week. West coast is 6-7 times per week, my last summer in perth, I rode every weekend at Woodies and every afternoon at Melville. Wasn't a spot of rain for 4 months. Waves we can agree on. Waves are pretty consistently nice.

My Parents live in Port Macquarie. It is a great little city with a lot going for it. They claim to have the best climate in Australia. It is a great spot for wave based sports, there are more boggie boarders than i have seen anywhere else for some reason, but also a strong surfing and supping community. However I have never encountered many kiters there. There are a few but I wouldn't describe there numbers as many. I'm not sure why, they get half decent wind( not as good as the south coast) maybe its because the best places to kite in the area arent in port itself but a short drive away?

I moved to South West Rocks 7 yrs ago which is 80ks north of Port Macquarie. I love the area, great temp all year round, good windsurfing and although I don't kite I have seen plenty in the area. There are sharks here but they are not a problem like in WA.

Well Dave I'm a few hours North, but I kite a lot up here in Lennox, 6 out of the last 7 days. One was pretty short when the wind changed and dropped, but a mate who was on it when it first came up had over an hour to himself. The others were all decent sessions ranging from overpowered on a 7m to a cruisey 7klm downwinder on a zephyr and large TT, and I've been getting out at least 2-3 times per week most of winter and now spring.
I agree when its on in WA you do get more days in a row than anywhere else in Oz, with the exception of maybe FNQ over winter (but no waves).
When its a not so good season in WA like the last couple, its better on the East Coast I reckon.
But anyway we agree on the waves and sort of saying the same things on the wind, overall summer it wins more in strength of wind, year round East Coast wins for waves and wind in my experience.
