Awesome day - kited until my arms fell off, took some pics, kited some more, then headed down to st kilda and took some more..

I promised a couple of peeps who I saw on the beach I'd put up a thread for these - this is just a taster while I figure out how / where I'm gonna put the rest!

Black and red fuel, was keeping everyone on the pier very amused.

Then this lady went a lot higher - the 'merican boys standing next to me completely lost it :)

And a composited sequence - need to work on my photoshop skills...

flickr.com/photos/upsidedownmark/3324236635/

lastly a couple from brighton earlier in the day - got some nice shots of this chap

flickr.com/photos/upsidedownmark/3325069830/

and quite a few of this one too..

Tried to get some of everyone, even the beginners. Will figure it all out in due course, sadly I have a day job, gets right in the way

Oh well, lets see now....lets give it the DaveSpruce treatment...

1. There are no kites in any of these shots
2. These angles and "action" shots are common as muck
3. if not for the captions they would really of very little interest to anyone except the photographer, the ppl in the shots, or photo zealots who will typically want to know all the technical meta-jumbo too.
4. Anyone who spends enough money can take crisp, well lit, multi-sequence shots like these. It demonstrates nothing particularly meritorious.
5. A good photo has little or nothing to do with technical quality. A good photo is art.

Before you all start, I am well aware that the photos were not posted to invite a condescending technical appraisal, but some people just dont see that. They just have to offer their unsolicited technical assessment. Which is just fine if your photos are the "same old, same old" technically excellent crap that these "experts" think so highly of.

But if you post your everyday el-cheapo camera happy snaps here for yer mates (etc) to see, then expect to get a whole heap of useless advice from cashed up yuppies who think their $10,000 camera collection makes them an expert on photography.

There was a shot published in the Age (I think) a week or two ago showing a father and his 2 kids, one of them naked on his shoulders, looking at what seemed to be a sunset with huge dark storm clouds coming though. On closer inspection it was the middle of the day and they were looking at the smoke from the Victorian fires. I initially though it was a painting someone had done to dramatically convey the incredible sense of loss. It took quite a while before I realised it was in fact a photograph. It was very real.

Like I said - A good photo is art. A good photo will move you out of your comfort zone. These are just happy snaps taken with an expensive camera.

Lol.. did I miss something

Yeah, it's an expensive(ish) camera, (depending on your definition) - a Nikon D90 with nice glass on the front for whatever it matters - it could have been a much more expensive one, but I'm not inclined to spend pro money on a hobby.

It's also quite easy to get non-sharp shots even with good kit, check out some in the composite sequence...

As for art, that's very subjective, frankly I don't think any sports photography is art - it's 90% technical. What you refer to is more photojournalism; or equally possibly just dumb luck - there's no substitute for being there.

Anyways, they are what they are, not looking for adulation or critique, just for the interest of those snapped, same as I'd appreciate seeing any decent photos of me riding. Just sharing the stoke from a good day

P.S. I will take suggestions on getting interesting shots with the kite in frame.

Hey people lets just accept that some people have really good cameras and are rather skilled photographers and some people (me included) just like to share the stoke with happy snaps they have taken with their little point and shoot.
It's all good AFAIC.

P.S. Thanks for sharing the photo's Mark1234

Dont listen to the wanker
Your shots are cool, now you can step it up.

Grab a wide angle and get out there on a sandbank, youll get some awesome shots , more dramatic with the rider and kite in the frame. Try some slow shutter speeds and pan with the rider to get some nice speed blurr

You have a week to get this shot!

I disagree with a fair amount of the feedback you posted here. One of the only ways to get decent kiteboarding shots is with communication between the photography and the riders. In this case, the photographer didn't know the people in question make it really difficult to talk to them or to get shots without having shadows cast across the kiters. In most cases, the difference between an average photo and a decent photo is about where the kiteboarder jumps rather than what he does.

Having a decent kiteboarder also affects you as well, because if you can direct a kiteboarder into jumping or landing in a particular spot, this makes life easier to put the kite in the frame, rather than just having to shoot with the widest angle and cropping afterwards.

If a guy wants a good shot of a kiteloop with the kite in the picture for example, and the sun is behind your back left shoulder with the rider coming from right to left in front of you, most riders would try do their trick directly in front of you, when in reality, they need to start their trick before you and already be midway through the trick when they are at a 45 degree angle to your right. The irony is pull out any camera with a remotely long looking zoom on it at any of the kite spots and guys are suddenly fighting over each other to get into the frame but none of them has the sense to ask:

a) are you taking photos of a mate?
b) if you are taking photos of random people, where do you want me?

So in this case, I say no fault to the photographer, and I agree with some of the sentiment that its the subjects that are to blame in this case. If people want decent shots of themselves they need to understand where they should be in relation to the sun and where to place their kite.

Oookaaay! What is it with forums (not just kite ones either)? I really don't understand this whole pointing and name calling mentality - bit like poleys vs kiters (won't go there), wtf?? we all have something in common, ease up :)

@longy: appreciate the challenge, but the way the weather's been this week, next day that's kitable I'll be RIDING, not taking pictures :)

Note that I said *interesting* shots with the kite in the frame - my issue with wideangle shots is that 99% finish up with 2 dots in a sea of nothingness. Classic wideangle technique says be in very close a foreground subject (that'd be the rider) - that would mean working together with a very good subject who can perform on demand, on spot - and even then... It'd be fun to do around sunset with some strobes perhaps, but I think I'll stick to happy snaps with a big lens that's compensating for something

Why is it I'm not surprised that disability discrimination is also a part of your character
