Hi,
I am curious to ask if anyone else has developed pain in their rib/ribs due to the harness they use? For the past two months I've have had serve pain in my back, which after seeing a chiropractor turns out to be a dislodged rib (right inline with the top edge of my harness, right handside of my spine, right next to my kidney).
He has been putting it back in place, but as soon as my harness is on .... BAM that night in bed the pain is back. The super odd thing is that I've had this harness for almost 18 months and no trouble at all - it just started two months ago....
I am going to try a seat harness for the next few sessions and see if that makes any difference. I would be grateful to see if anyone else has experienced similar issues...?
Thanks.

Pretty common injury in kiters, rowers, sail boarders, it's possibly an injury that your harness aggravates more than causes, building a strong muscle group in this region is important, also warming up prior to a session, bloody painfull one this injury, hanging off a beam for 1 minute reps helps plus 10x10 reps of alternating pull ups each day has given mee a season free from this injury, the pull from a seat harness is lower and less taxing on the arms which in turn lessens the use of muscles across the back , a good physio would be worth a visit ,emphasis on good, carefull with some anti inflam drugs as they arnt the best with tissue repairs which surround your ribs

I had a similar thing happen, got pulled backward through a wave and then caught in the wash. From that point on I couldn't have a session longer than 10 minutes without getting an incredible pain in the back, thought my kiting days were over. Went to a chiro and he did his bull**** on me but what healed it was a ton of swimming, about 2km a day. Once it healed I switched over to a seat harness and have never had a problem since. I've been tempted to try out the waist harness again since it's been a couple of years but it's probably not worth the risk of losing a month's worth of sessions.

I tore some cartilage in my ribs during a kite session in February this year and haven't kited since. The pain has since gone but my ribs haven't healed back into their normal shape, and I now have a lump where part of my ribcage is sticking out. I just bought a Dakine nitrous boardshort/ seat harness after talking to another kiter who had the same injury, and he raved about how good they were. Fingers crossed they do the job. I would spew if I had to give it all away.

A couple of poorly executed backroll kiteloops and I had bruised ribs for about 10 months out of the past 3 years. Then someone told me to keep my kite low in the window, and stop dangling in 30 knots all the time. Worked a treat, even while the injuries were still healing

As for the pain near kidney, that'd be the actual kidney from the after kite beer sessions, fuuuurk all you can do about that

Feel ya pain, smashed mine kiting in march, broke/tore cartlidge from ribs, last couple of ribs on bottom left side, kited for first time very tentatively 2 weeks ago, then again last week, no pain but a big lump and an odd numb feeling where it broke, just started swimming again as well.

Already had a doggy back so have used the nitrous for last 6 years or so, no probs as nowhere near ribs. good luck.

So a quick update...

Have been to see the Physio now for a few weeks and my ribs are fine. What's caused the pain in my back and ribs are called Trigger Points in my Glutes. These are known to cause much discomfort in the lower back area!

So anyone with similar problems would be advised to get this area looked at.

Cheers.

I've had sacro-illiac pain on and off for the past 3 weeks, sometimes so acute i had to lie on the floor and do hip rotations.

Been to osteo and it was only a bit better.

Went for a quick session today down at Rosebud (my safety bungee snapped but that's another story) - waist harness , kite pulling like the clappers....long and the short of it - lower back is now fixed...0 pain....the harness must have pulled the SI joint back into position.

I found this old sailing shanty which seems appropriate at this juncture

As The Sea Is My Mistress
By: Felix L. Perry

Gather round me young lads, pull ye up an empty keg
I’ll tell you of life at sea, of the mistress and the hag
Oh so cruel she’ll steel a young man’s heart away
Once he hears her siren call she’ll have her say
She’ll shackle his soul to the smell of the salt brine
Capture his mind to the lore of foreign women and wine
Ask him to sacrifice his very life in a gale of woe
When Neptune rolling seas will allow no man to sleep below
She’ll make him heed his Captain’s call to risk life and limb
To climb the widow maker’s rigging and sing a hymn

Ah but on those perfect days when the sky is blue
When white sails billow in the wind like they’re meant to do
When the sea birds sing to the hum of the shrouds
Far from the city smog and the bustling crowds
Yes me lads… ‘tis then you will know the kiss of the sea
Yes ‘tis only then… you will love her and forever you’ll be
The lover of the fair mistress of the blue
A sailor of the high seas forever to her true .
