Hi.

In the next few months (when the weather gets better and stingers go away) I am going to start learning to kite surf and take a few lessons. I have always used a PFD when doing any water sports.

I have a self inflating type 3, but thats not suitable for kite surfing, so I am looking for a PFD/impact vest thats suitable for wearing a harness with.

I know Jet Pilot make them does anyone know if these are suitable for use with kitesurfing harnesses

Question: Does an impact vest in waves keep you in wave for longer as you have more bouyancy and can't get under the wave? I was thinking of getting one of them as well but i have concerns that they are more of a hinderance in the surf?

Basically, what are the pros and cons?

Run a search in seabreeze for impact vests - been discussed a few times over the last year - here are a couple of the results. I use a Ripcurl PFD3 vest plus seat harness. Got the vest from a skiing/wakeboard shop (dozens of models to choose from).

Hey orb74,

A bouyancy vest in the surf will be a major problem as it will float you on the waters surface, but it isn't bouyant enough to keep you above the foam where you can't breathe.

Can't duck sets with a PFD on. Don't do it, you'll likely drown!

We sell the Jetpilots, none of them work with a waist harness, but do work Ok with a seat harness. They are the only rated vests they are PFD1.
If you wear a waist harness then the NPX vest is good or last years Cabrinha, also the Dakine.

I've used mine in surf, tow in guys use the Jetpilots, really don't see the problem with the use of them in surf, provided they are just impact vests that fit snuggly and still allow you to swim/dogpaddle/tread water.

The mystic one works with a waist harness and is really decent (you know the mystic harness quality)
