Hey mate, you will find wind tends to be frontal in Auckland in the winter. It has what my Uncle likes to call "Stripey weather" as in, it rains, then is sunny, then it rains again. The clouds sit in parallel stripes across the sky. I think summer tends to be better as you get more seabreezes then.

Growing up in Wellington and Napier sailing as a teenager we used to have a derogatory term known as "Auckland Sailor" ie, someone who is soft and doesn't like wind.

That said, I haven't been back for a while. Orewa is a real retirement village though! A little further up the coast you have the Wairewa beach, which is pretty popular, and if the wind is stink, you can always cook yourself in the hot pools ;-)

hey it is best in summer like lostinlondon said but its really luck if you get wind there. (in winter) it is becoming a very popular kite beach and can be crowded if it on (10 kites or so) lol

Nov - March is the warmest time. Just back from a session now and it is quite cold but at least windy. The west coast is only 50 mins drive from Orewa too.

bit of wild west coast

HAHA yea thats the way! not sure if Kiwi's copy the aussies on this short business as they are a bit harder over there no offence[}:)], and if there are any they're obviously Aussie lads.
As for the wetty I'd take a 5mm and a 8mm just for the added annoyance........

grow some hair on ur balls lads.. i kited auckland from september to december wen i lived there with a session or two in july and i only had a 3/2 springy with a rashie over the top.. i left the water blue lipped and pale as anything, thats where kiting is at n u know u are addicted.

take a 3/2 or a 5/3 steamer for that time n ul b set, best winds are in spring hands down.
