Hey,
I am new to kiting, 2013 was my first season but getting up and generally upwind for a few sessions.
Where is good in perth in the northerly/NE? Melville, Pinnaroo, Pt Kennedy?
Any spots a total no go?
Much appreciated, seeya out there.
Cheers
Jeff
My dear young man........how do you expect to get the tips as a hiltonhood? You put a smile on my face. If I were you, I'de use a map and a weather forecast. And if you are smart you wait until the seabreezes come in and play with your kite while waiting. Very difficult to learn in winter, so spend your time efficiently and building the stoke until like November, or go north.
Try Woodies for all wind directions, your bound to find like minded people there too..............there is NO KN wind in Perth ATM. The swell is on though.
Light wind kiting in winter on sunny days in Perth with no clouds is pretty safe. You will eventually find the place by default you just need to look at a map of perth and have a leisurely drive looking at possible locations according to that offshore wind direction .All of a sudden you will see the light!.
Kitesurfing reconisence missions are half the fun of kiting .I love driving around checking out locations.Your options are limitless in Perth!.
Point Walter is best on Northerly , North West ,and North East. Beginners are better off at the East part of the spot "Point Walter dog beach" . I love kiting there in winter as usually only a few guys out and av age 40 .. So I feel right a home. :)
Melville Water Applecross is good as well but be careful if it's straight onshore (westerly) as the road and trees are close to the beach..
the hot earth act like a vacuum sucking up all the cold air off the cold sea. this air then gets heated and pushed up over the hot earth. this is what the refer to as the sea breeze.
at night the opposite happens. cold air from land gets sucked out to see this is what they call. the land breeze
this is what makes winter kiteing a bit tricky, we cant simply rely apon the heating and cooling aspects of the land to create our wind.
hope this helps....and that im correct for once.....
Anywhere really mate. As long as it's parallel or cross on shore. Wouldn't go to melville though as council laws indicate you are not allowed to kite there in winter. If you would kite there in winter it might also get banned in summer.
As most people say woodies is the go. Awesome choice for chop and flat watrr
I learnt all through last winter and IMO north - north west wind is your friend in winter.
Anything with too much west becomes too gusty and too unpredictable.
Frontal driven southerly wind...... well completely opposite too a sea breeze. Not much fun at all when learning.
Like I said learnt all through last winter without a drama and it all paid off last summer. I was confident enough to get out by myself every afternoon that it blew. Just be sensible about it Jeff and if it feels too strong don't risk it. Not worth loosing/smashing your kite or injuring yourself. If everyone else is out on their 11's or 10's you should be on an 8. If you don't have an 8 don't do it and so on and so forth.
People told me to put my kite away till October and there was no way that was going to happen.
Get into it but use your head.... Just my experience and advice.
