Hey Folks

I just picked up a 17m dyno (outgoing model).
when it flies there is a bit of slack on the 5th line (I'd have to pull it in about 70mm to put tension on it).
is this right or should I tune it to take a bit of tension?
the manual isn't much cop
thanks in advance

The 5th will become slacker as you depower. On full power, (trim strap out fully) if you have a little slack then you can adjust it with one one the knots if you like but make sure it is not tight..it doesn't want to be under tension. The 5th has a red bead and stainless ring as a stopper up where the y point comes off to the front lines and this takes the pull from the nose of the kite. The tension on the 5th from the bead to the kite does not change if you adjust the trim..

... yes the 5th will be slack and should be slack most of the time, especially above the Y point!

The only time it is under tension is when fully powered up and you've pulled the bar in, usually when kite is climbing.

If you have constant tension on the 5th line then you need to trim the lines so that it does not. The tension on the 5th means that the front of the kite (nose) is being pulled forward and will effect the efficiency of the kite, especially the upwind abilities.

Do you know how to trim or adjust lines on a bar??

Thanks folks.
Are you referring to knots under the plastic at the ends of the bar Robbie?
Cheers

... sorry for delay in reply, only just saw it just now!

All lines should be equal length with trim rope completely let go so fully powered and bar against the chicken loop.

Easiest way is to run lines out, then put the line ends through a screw driver and stick into ground, making sure the ground is sort of hard so you can lean on the lines to pull a bit of tension.

Make sure fully powered up then pull on bar and lean back on the lines checking that all the lines are even length.

If steering lines shorter or longer, adjust the line length either under the floats or inside the bar ends if its a 2013/2014 bar. Move the knots up or down til all the lines are equal.

Now go grab the single white front line just below the Y point. Pull and put a bit of tension on it. When you pull it make sure that the little red ball (below the Y ring) is against the Y point ring. All the front lines should be even length. If one is longer or shorter, repair as needed.

What usually happens to me is since the front left and right front lines are always under tension while kiting, they stretch so that the 5th line is shorter. I simply just put an extention on that line only to bring it into alignment with the others. The extension goes on the 5th line that is above the Y ring. Somewhere in your spares kit (possibly in kite bag spare kit) is a little blue extension loop thingy, this usually does the trick for me. If you can't find it, no worries, just make up a loop yourself. You can make up a loop and have a few knots in it so you can trim and adjust for any further stretching.

The Dyno doesn't use the 5th line for its shape ie its not loaded so you can effectively put a long extra piece/loop in the 5th line above the Y and it won't affect the flying of the kite, the line will just hang down a bit. But, if the line is taut all the time, this means the line is pulling the nose of the kite down and this will affect performance.

Now we check the red safety line that goes through the bar is correct length. If you need to just adjust the little position to another knot further along so that it is a little slack when you pull the bar.

Lastly, go back to bar and check overall lengths again by pulling a bit of tension.

Hope this helps and your not even more confused????

cheers,

Robbie
