Hi Everyone,

I am just wanting to get everyones thoughts on newbies boarding in the area next to the Marina and Pier. Personally i find it incredibly dangerous and people really need to understand where they are from a skill level perspective.

We have all been there at the start but with the number of kites in St Kilda on a good day i feel that newbs must stay out of this area and improve their skills in the bay.

Thoughts?????????????

As have understood it, the marina area is for advanced riders. Learners should not be there as one kite in the middle sitting at 12 o'clock stuffs the circuit up for everyone. I'm an experienced rider, by no means awesome but even I tend to steer clear of the pond.

There used to be a cool flash app on the KBV website that clearly explained the various areas at St Kilda.

Exactly what you have described has now ruined my and a numer of others last two sessions at St Kilda ( a reminder of why I don't bother going there that often)

Idiot newbies standing smack bang in the middle of the circuit with their kites at 12 yesterday one bloke was body dragging right through the circuit for at least 10min kite at almost 12.

Newbies: 1. You are not supposed to be kiting in the pond
2. If you insist on doing so... Be prepared for an earful of abuse as you are ruining other peoples sessions

For fks sake please note :
if you are on the down wind side of the circuit lower your kite to 45degrees or less
If you are on the upwind side of the circuit raise your kite above 45 This allows everyone to pass and keep the flow

DO NOT. Stop in the middle of the circuit (kite at 12) to have a chat yo your mate with the camera for 10min go to the beach..... Or rest your kite wingtip on the water.

DO NOT. Turn up in the advanced area wearing an impact vest, helmet and BOARD LEASH then proceed to mow the lawn through the circuit with a massive poo stance

DO NOT. Kite hard up against the pier or RMYC slipway as the club has complained many times and has requested that kiters stay away from this area.... It is on the KBV site as a local rule. RMYC have jurisdiction over the entire marina area... So respect their one rule and keep the spot open for all.

Understand the local rules and kite in the designated area for your ability and we can all get along.

I also understand that you have to ride from end to end of the area to maximise the effective space, and attempt a jump/trick at the beach end - otherwise stop wasting everyone's time and get out in the open water.

I stopped riding there when a guy 10m upwind of me decided to do a massive jump, flew down through me, collecting my kite in the process. Luckily nobody was hurt -although my front lines did an awesome job of cutting his kite from the trailing edge to the leading edge - street justice style.

that's why I don't go there at all!
to crowded and to dangerous!
I stay at my local and enjoy a quiet ride in and out even if its a bit more choppy.
...and the price for the parking sucks anyway!....the after beer is therefore covered too.....

Bottom line: If you ride Poo stance, or more importantly, don't know what Poo stance is, you're not ready for the marina area. You are a danger to yourself and others.

Great stuff guys!!

Very happy to see that many feel the same way. i will be personally making sure newbies are aware that they shouldnt be in the area. politely initially then taking it from there.

Whilst i cant confirm firsthand or not if this is occuring or not. i believe the Kite Schools that operate in St Kilda should be heavily reinforcing that their students learn their craft in the open bay before getting in the pond.

Cheers,

@Potter

Thanks. Used to hit the track and dirt once upon a time. But struggling these days to find time. Just focusing on the kiting at the moment, landings are a little softer ;)

Bikes = lots of fun for windless days. Got an XJ6N in October and been having lots of fun with it.

Back on topic, this is the first year I've noticed the newbies taking over the pond completely. I think the problem is they don't even know the rule exists because everyone I've spoken to looks blankly at me. The kiddies pond name probably doesn't help either. Part of the problem may be that the instructors seem to be lining the entire sand bank from top to bottom making it pretty difficult for anyone to get out on the other side so maybe they're being forced down that end.

I'm not trolling here, but I feel genuinely bad for you guys who have to ride in a circuit. Sounds miserable to me. Nothing I hate worse than riding within 100m of another kiter. Seems to be heading like surfing at some spots, line up for your slot, don't stuff it up, have your one shot, etc..

Quick question
with the impact vest
kites are classed as vessle? have to abide by boating rules?
have to wear PFD/impact vest??
not having ago or anything just trying work out what the deal is.
ive got an impact vest for sking and wake boarding. but i dont wear anything on the kite.

can you clear this up for me please.
cheers cam

Don't think the instructors give a rats, they are mostly euros that are short-termers in the Melbourne kite scene. I was shocked to see them taking lessons in an onshore 25knot gusty wind at St Kilda a few weeks ago. It's all getting a little crazy.

Is it just me or do you guys start to long for less crowded gnarly cold weather winter sessions this time of year.

I agree that the instructors seem to be running lessons in all sorts of conditions, but I think I was there on that day - 25 knot, gusty Westerly where you couldn't hold a line to keep clear of all the lessons. I've also seen lessons creep up into the kiddie pool as well. We could blame the blow in instructors but I know for a fact that the senior guys running the schools at the beach are guys that have come to Melbourne for repeat seasons.
