The other day I released the QR while riding which sent the kite flying off at speed and snapped the safety (worn) safety line. I ordered a brand new replacement one and tried it out today.
When I launched I found that I couldn't keep the bar square and had to pull one side of the bar to keep the kite still as if lines were uneven. So I called it a day and checked the lines. The front and rear lines, left and right rear lines all balance out. This makes me think that it was the centre lines that were uneven - quite likely the new safety line made the line to be shorter on its side.
It's a 2011 Ozone bar and the safety line I'm talking about is the approx 50cm long braided line - one of its end gets hooked to the leash and the other to a centre line.
Now is this a likely scenario? Do I need to stretch a new safety line before flying it?? Is there a way to verify the lengths without flying the kite? I can't see a way with this design since it doesn't have that Y joint in the middle.
Did you get the right length safety line?
I replaced flag out lines on my 2011 edges the other day and they both fly fine.
One reason I can think of why your kite would fly uneven is if you got a flag out line from say a new C4 (which has shorter bar throw) and that would effectively shorten one of the center lines. But even then I think flag out lines have quite a bit of stretchiness in them.
Another is that maybe you put the red stopper above the metal pulley thingy rather than below?
It's definitely the right length. I have a 2010 one as well and that one's far longer and the new one's about the same length as the snapped one.
Now that you mention it - I think it's the red stopper... Must have lost it ![]()
. I guess this is meant to stop the 'knot' from going past the bracket?![]()
there are different size safety lines from ozone. I remember been given an ozone instinct safety for my c4 a while back. They are different lengths
I think it definitely would have been the red stopper ball. Without it the knot between one of the center lines and a flag out line will pull through the metal bracket effectively making center lines uneven.
Sounds like its the right safety/flag out line but it will def need the red stopper ball, if you can't find the old one let me know I'll send you one.
Same problem here Rodno, I lenghtened my safety line at the bar end and moved the ball down about 50mm. It's all good now. I think what happens is the de-power line stetches over time such that when the kite is fully powered the safety line is fully loaded. Your kite would have flown right depowered a bit. And I think the saftey lines are prone to breaking because they spend time loaded, I've had a couple fail on me also.
Finally had a chance to test the line setup today.
For the record, it was the red stopper ball not being there. Thanks guys ![]()
