New in kitesurfing with a 2005 kite

Yes it is...What model is it?

It would be far safer to use as a classic beach shelter.

Set fire to the old ****ter kite and buy a near new ex demo 3 strut learners/wave sle kite.

People have learnt on them in the past but kite gear has come a long way since then. Even a 2010 kite will be much safer. As mentioned by others grab a 2nd hand or demo kite. The guys at the shops will help you find something much safer and suited to your needs and budget. Kitepower in Sydney are always a great help
Ditch the 2005 kite, you will only spend the money you saved on medical bills for either yourself or someone else. I think you will find learning to be a little easier and less frustrating with a more modern kite too

cant imagine the valves would be any good ether. just scrap it and buy somthing around the $300 mark post 2010.

I started kiting a few years and in my research on buying a beginner 2nd hand kite, the general consensus was around 2010/2011 there was a significant improvement in safety features. I was never sure exactly what but I limited my search to only kites after than date.

You might find some kites a little bit older that were ahead of the safety game but 2005 is a stretch. I wouldn't use it, except maybe as a hammock waiting for the wind to pick up. Actually that would be kinda cool.

Thank you all. I m new as I mentionned and the selling guy told me is 5 years old...I then found the model on the Internet and is 2005 model. Glad I found the forum, and got early advise.
Any advise on the best kite to start with?

Yeah, I'd say probably don't do that. Not knowing the exact bar that came with the Naish, there will probably be heaps of slack and easy to tangle around bar and person. The flag out line on that vintage I don't think went through the bar causing it to tangle easier.

To respond to the OP, sure, we all learned on these kites 15 years ago but also that is all we knew and that's what everyone had. We compared our progress and experiences to those around us. If you were to compare how you are learning/progressing on that gear today compared to others on modern gear, it will be like you're speaking a different language. There are many different techniques between the two.

Best to get something 2010 or newer. It will probably be a more pleasant experience.

I did it..worked a treat but yes slacky
But true something like a slingshot fuel/rev 09/10 is 200 -250 bucks and heaps better bar,lines

I say if you allready bought it use it with a longer safety until u find a 2010 one.nothing wrong with that or hurry.good luck..

Don't buy a fuel to learn on.......
Probably not the easiest kite to learn on.
Relaunch is a prick if you havnt had experience.
Buying a first kite is a bit like your first car.....
You are goings to crash, and break stuff.

Go something cheap, popular (spare parts accessible )
Slingshot rally or rev.
Cabrinha switchblade.
Naish ride
Airush dna
North evo
Liquid force envy
All really good beginner kite's.
One of these or something similar is perfect.
But don't go buy a direct connected c-kite.

Kite + board time = progression.....
So the more time you spend trying to relaunch or screwing around trying to fix things, the slower you will learn.
Buying one of the big 5 brands also means you can build a quiver of the one kite. It's not hard to find the same kite in different size's, which is important (not vital though) because you can be comfortable with how the kite flu's & it's characteristics. You will be far more confident when over powered if you know the kite and how it will fly.

Look for kite's with 'sheet & go' characteristics.
You can & will learn on SLE hybrid kite's, but you will learn quicker on a bow kite. Instant depower when sheeting out.

That's my 2cents worth.

Do your research, and before you buy anything, ask around and make sure it's suitable for you.

I learnt on Fuels, anything newer than 2011 relaunches fine.

Not the case for the older ones.


My 2 bobs is get a switchblade. You will learn heaps quicker and they are pretty good kites.

But the kites mypassingwind suggested is bang on the money.
