Interested to hear some feedback from other riders in this weight range.
I've put a tentative order in for a board with the following dimensions: 5'7 x 18.5" x 2.25"
Board will be used 90% strapless riding, although will have inserts. I prefer using a smaller kite and a bit more board volume. I feel this board should be at my lower limit of paddling.
Tempted to increase the width a bit maybe another quarter inch to 18.75".
Here is the board template:
Cheers!
Looks nice more pulled than your earlier 5'8" katana quad.
I liked the little extra width in the 5'8" must be 28ltrs.
The 5'7" 23ltrs.
Little extra width with low rails would keep the litres down plus the little extra weight from the inserts.
BWS shapers / designers give good info on there board range. Liked what Pat Rawson had to say.
Bottom shape as you know can make a huge difference to a board lift and drive depending on what you ask for.
You've gone back to 3 fins over 4?
My 2cents (comfort) paddle 32ltrs similar weight older and slower.
Also like a little more length 6'1". Conditions east side means a little extra volume ok and don't need inserts.
Cheers
Hey Dowls, yeah my current 5'8 katana quad is for surfing only, it's a sick board but a bit wide for kiting WA breezes (good light wind board though). I've also wrecked a heap of ordinary surfboards recently so something stronger is required.
This new board will be for kiting only, but I have found that they tend to work out well when they sit at the lower end of paddle range - 23L should be about right.
Board will have 5 fin option.
5'7 x 18.75 x 2.25 is the same dimensions as the Rawson, but as you say it's all in the shape, contours and rocker.

I'd say weight as well, Dave's boards come out really light, might be inclined myself to stay a little narrower given that they are probably (I'm guessing here) stiffer than the straight up eps and E glass that BWS use.
I'd go one of the BWS Rawsons if they'd just do it in better materials (well better to my mind anyway, PU and use S glass rather than E)
