WAKSA has recently been advised that a number of new kiters at Melville Beach are unaware of the established guidelines for kiting at Melville Beach and appear to be in breach of the local guidelines.
In previous years, considerable effort has gone in to keeping this spot open to kiting, including extensive negotiation with the City of Melville and the Dep't of Transport. WAKSA encourages all kiters at Melville to follow the local guidelines so that the local residents aren't given reason to complain about our favourite activity at this spot.
Please be aware that the following local guidelines have been in place for several years:
- No kiting inside the three yellow buoys, only launch and land inside this area.
- No flying kites over the grass or road, especially when walking back up wind.
- All learners to locate down-wind of the large white gum tree (this gives guys learning tricks a short section free of 'day one' body draggers and the like).
- Keep all gear off the cycle path.
- Only park in designated areas i.e. not on the grass verge. If the main road is full, park up a side street.
- Accommodate and respect other beach users - Melville is a shared public resource. Our continued access is a negotiated privilege not a right. There are a number of very active local residents who are monitoring kiting activities @ Melville. We don't want to, or need to give them 'ammunition' that could be used against us.
WAKSA is in the process of getting some cards printed highlighting these local guidelines. We urge all regular kiters at Melville to acknowledge the work done in previous years to keep this valuable spot open for kiters.
We encourage all kiters, new and more experienced, to work together to ensure that Melville continues as a viable kite location.
Regards,
WAKSA
WAKSA has had a lot of resources used up in the past negotiating access to this spot. WAKSA are not however rangers or police. It is up to you guys to police the area and keep it safe for all users of the area...
sorry juddy but i've given up trying to tell people to walk with their kite over the water , not to come in past the yellow buoys unless landing/launching as i often get greeted with abuse from both blowins and locals. actually more locals than blowins .
Cocksuckers who think its awesome to come tearing in and turn right on the beach .
Is there anything else we can do for the people who don't use seabreeze? I think some pamphlets under windscreen wipers with these rules wouldn't go amiss. Saves the agro BS that can come from politely informing people of the local rules. I'm happy to help distribute them if WAKSA will lend a bit of credability to the info by putting their stamp (logo) on them.
They don't have to be too flash or expensive. I just know jack about layout and printing. Anybody here or on the WAKSA comittee do this sort of thing?
Can we get some in the shop to hand out to new kiters?
might be worth doing this for other problem spots too ( Mullaz, Woodys, Cott, Pelli Point)
Some days is shocking for crowds at Melville. Even hard to get away from the beach. This is my 4th summer kiting there ands its busy and way to many people doing stupid things. I have seen residents with cameras taking photos which is fair enough as most accidents can be prevented. I now make recent trips to leighton and enjoy the big beach, open space and rolling swells. Great idea with the pamplets.
