Planning underway for a mega down-winder.
Looking at possibilities from far south of Mandurah (eg Preston Beach or further south) to Shoalwater.
Will have to be short notice - any weekend day that will work from end of April onwards.
Looking for support boats &/or a pilot for my Jet Kayak (kitestockers will know what I mean) as well as one or two cars to follow for pick up of any drop-outs.
Anything possible at this stage -
- ? bus from Shoalwater to drop-off or car shuffle
- ? food at start &/or food at the end
etc etc.
So much depends on numbers that I would like to get an indication of who would be likely to be a starter if it gets a green light some weekend in May.
No point going to all the effort if we cant get decent numbers.
It will also be a qualifying event for anyone applying for the kite leg of the Megatriathalon from Cape York to PNG. As this is a charity event I would like to see participants joining in a fund raising effort as well. Not compulsory though.
Ring or text me if ur keen - 0430 966 397.
Would appreciate input from anyone with intimate knowledge of the coast either side of Preston Beach.
As you are no doubt aware you will be lucky to get consistent wind at that time of the year but with the conditions we had for summer anything is possible so good luck.
hey puppet
i often do downwinders from madora bay to shoalwater
it is quite weird because any further south the wind starts to drop out
also around long point the you have to stay a fair way out as wind also drops out near the jetty
but all in all it is a fun down winder
Hey Puppet, I'm KEEN (like mustard)
Roster has me free for the weekend of 12 - 13 (could do Friday or Monday too)
Can't help out with transport as such, but willing to help with other organising if you get the numbers
Never really done a downwinder but there is a first time to everything. However you reckon for a first timer, would I be better of in doing it in summer with a consistent SW?
Can't really arrange any transport but would be happy to help out with any other arrangements that would have to be done, even if I might not participate in the actual event because of a lack of experience I'd still like to help out.
Keep me posted mate!
Count me in, but somehow don't think my 10 will b big enuf? Don't like our chances of decent wind???
Nice take on it Eppo - sounds logical enough to be accurate. Huge open beach like that should get clean wind?
If this mega-down-winder gets up its not going to be a seabreeze so frontal cross-on or onshore could just make this beach ideal. Looking on google it looks like accessable beach from Bunbury right thru to Tims Thicket. If we are going to be tackling it on fickle frontal weather this may just be the perfect location. Enter & exit anywhere, temporarily or end it, if it gusts up or drops off. Could possibly spend a whole day there giving it our best shot. Esp if we can get at least one vehicle legally covering the whole beach front. Thinking it could just be an awesome day out, win or lose, for all takers giving it a punt.
cmon - not too many expressions of interested yet?
Comments pls........
bit of a tip for vehicle access(beach) puppet, Whitehills through to Tim's exit can be problematic at the moment, Whitehills south to Preston is fine atm but to get through to Tims is a tide and sand issue at the moment, one particular spot were you need to get around a rocky outcrop can only be done at low tide and swell needs to be minimal (1.5m). Of course Tims to Melros is closed with beach access at Melros only for launching boats. Then the stretch up to the Cut is off limits until Pyramids from there on a coastal road is on offer. Good luck sounds like fun.
