Hi Guys,

Never done a kiting holiday. I'm looking at le morne in Mauritius or el gouna/ ras sudr in Egypt in June/July.
Has anyone been and can give some info on one or both of these places?
Mainly looking for flat water areas with shallow waters to teach someone

Thanks!

Hi mate,

Never been to Mauritaus but lived in Marsa Alam Egypt for a year. The kiting there is gold, especially in their summer when you are planning on going. Warm clear water and breeze often in by 8:00am and stays till dark. Mostly on my 9m but down to 7's and up to 17m on a few occasions.
I kited Emerald Lagoon, El Gouna, Soma Bay, Sharm el Sheik and countless unamed places in between.
Honestly reckon El Gouna was the pick but was staying in beachfront luxury Accom when there. Kited right in front of my room from the kite centre on the beach. Beautiful clear clean water over spectacular coral reef, wide butter flat reef lagoons about 800m off shore. Great spots to teach someone too. Did notice lessons were cheap too.

Resorts are average compared to other locations. 5 Star in Egypt equals 3 star in the rest of the world but still passable as it was cheap. Good good, drinks cheap, never had a personal security concern, except for a bunch of soldiers escorting me from the beach in two occasions for kiting in places the military felt were no go zones.
Outside the resorts though it's almost third world or desert on the majority of the Red Sea coast. I found it an incredible contrast and got to know a lot of locals in the town. Amazing people, most of them. English in the resorts is good but not so much in the small towns. Lots of smiles, nods and a handshake will get you by. Would pay to learn the basics in Egyptian Ariabic to help you if you plan on moving around outside the resorts. Marfeesh Mushkeela.

Highly recommend Egypt, but, those reef lagoons in Mauritaus do look spectacular.

It's winter in mauritius then.great winds cause the trade winds are blowing.but it's cooler and a little bit less day light.that said it's still the tropics so I've never been too cold and good thing about mauritius is its very interesting if your prepared to go exploring. Never been to eygyte so can't compare but I've always had a great time in mauritius. Be safe though cause Le morne gets quite big swell which creates rips in the lagoon.there are better beginner spots on the island just Google them.hope that helps

I spent 3 weeks of my life in Egypt. El Tur 1 week in late October and Hurghada 2 weeks in late September.
I managed to ride for about 1.5 hours in those 3 weeks. I guess I was just unlucky?

Don't get me started on the scorching heat. And the ridiculous number of Russians running around in the all you can eat buffet and acting like they own the place.

Don't go there if you're not planning on staying in a 5 star resort.

Actually, just don't go there.
