I don't want to be negative but kiting in waves when the waves close out in a line - more or less isn't much fun :-(
The flying aspect was pretty cool - but looping the parafoil in updraft conditions that close to rocks/the ground - it will come to grief at some point and not a thing all aspiring parafoil pilots should take as a safe practice ...
just my 2cw!!

Then you don't know have to have fun properly. Rip down or up the line as fast as you care and hold if for as long as you dare before it closes out. If the lip slaps you on the back as you exit... that's about as close as it gets. Plus those pitching close outs are awesome to boost off. Time it right and you go straight up and can even slack line the kite going up.
Awesome video!!
Was over there last November, kited in Auckland then traveled down to Tauranga via The Coramandel and managed to get some kiting in at Waihi beach on a northerly.
Stayed in Welcome Bay for a week and got a couple more days in at The Mount. Absolutely stunning part of the world, if u haven't been I would highly recommend.
Morning or evening walk over The Mount is a must do......
Wow that paragliding is sick, now if I was doing it it would be dangerous but he looks like he knows what he's doing, awesome kite control, thats unreal
Those paraglider loops were insane!! I have never seen that before, is he one of the only ones who does that? How the hell did he work up the nerve to try it the first time? What was the the thought process that led up to that
I should be able to pull this off
if I don't I'll die
ok lets give it a crack!!!
They are barrel rolls on a speed wing. Very cool but not real hard to do.
This is a paraglider doing loops.
First Vid was like Holly ****e I cant believe he's looping that close to the rock face, great control of his gear.
Sorry but second Vid was just looping...........still impressive but not as much as the first Vid.
Thanks for sharing
I met that Dave guy when I was snowkiting in Wanaka a few years back.
He showed me some footage he'd just taken of speed flying down a cliff face/mountain somewhere near Snowfarm. A couple of points it looked like he was about to hit the cliff - insane.
average kiting. Insane gliding. Really insane gliding!
Average kiting....seriously? Is there really any need to say sh!t like that?

I flew hang gliders for 18 years, and still fly fixed wing aircraft. One thing about aerobatics, is that you always allow "one mistake between you and the ground"
This type of flying looks incredible but he has absolutely no margin for error, and when you look at the base jumpers messing up, many were caused by the chute partly collapsing, or gusts of wind, such as a thermal breaking away from a rock face.

The kite surfing section is at my local beaches. Dave is from Tuaranga and does road trips over every now an then. I was there for most of the clips in this Vid. The wind of those days was manic. 30-40 crazy gusty and Dave is fangin around like its a balmy 20 knot seabreeze.... the waves on those days a could have been better... Any way. Believe me this guy is GOOD. It's not the best conditions. But feel free to book a ticket and come and experience them yourself!
Cool video! NZ is awesome ... visited there on an extended surf trip a long time ago and remember lots of driving to avoid wind. Now ... a different story! Can hardly wait to get back.
Speed flying ... seems halfway between base jumping and paragliding, in both fun and danger. A guy here in BC died doing it a couple months ago....as experienced and able as anyone, just caught a wing tip or something and down he goes. <shudder> Interesting how supposedly extreme sports like surfing or kiting don't seem so extreme in comparison to sports where any small mistake = probable death. Hate to be wimpy, but way too risky for this guy.

That "paraglider" looks like a Pansh.
The Paragliding looks awsome and have often thought of it. Just come back to the one realisation that when you stuff it up you don't hit the water...no second chances there.... If you paraglide like we kite then surely you'll be consuming a rock sandwich pretty soon!
Plummet pass on a **** yeah cous to Dave he is mad as hell and living life to it's fullest.
I'd rather die doing that than of a heart attack from being fat, not phat as in Mad Dave's case.
Gotta luv NZ and Kiwi's kiora ![]()
It all looked pretty impressive to a mere mortal like me, but the kite control near the cliffs really was something else!
Faaark.. those kiwis are nuts!
I'd love to try that paragliding.
Also - there's nothing average about the kiting.
Hats of to Dave and crew.Very impressive surfing and gutsy flying.
Thanks Plummet looks mad over there.5/4 wetties needed and 6-8m
Kites at times?
Cheers Leigh
