Hi! Has anyone surfed or kited a Lost Mayhem Beach Buggy surfboard?
Is it a suitable board for for kiting in waves? Dimensions 5'5" x 18.3" x 2.35". 24.5 liters. The manufacturer's website describes the rocker as "Relaxed central rocker, with forgiving catch-free nose lift" and "Taj's signature (generous) tail rocker" which I interpret to mean that it has a fairly flat rocker in the middle - which I think means that it ought to be good for early planing and going upwind?
I have the opportunity to pick up a used one at a good price and I am wondering if it would suit my needs. I have a good kite-specific surfboard (a 5'8" Cabrinha Trigger) at home which I am happy with in up to double overhead waves, but that board is not with me at this time so I am looking for a good used board.
How strong is the Beach Buggy board - I assume that I would have to reinforce it with a couple of extra layers of glass?
I weigh 75 kg. I'm an advanced wavekiter who would be riding the board in shoulder-high to overhead waves using wave-specific kites. While on the waves I prefer to surf the wave top-to-bottom without any pull from the kite, so the forces on the board will be as in regular paddle surfing when I am on the wave (but there will be significant forces when I tack back upwind). Some chop. I am a skilled light-wind kiter who usually ride smaller kites and boards than others of my weight.
I would have serious strength concerns. Much shortboard stuff is single 4oz bottom and they can't handle just being surfed.... let alone kiting (albeit with your skill and care).
The fin inserts are not up to it (but if you do at least get Futures as its wayyyyy stronger)
Yeah can barely surf the modern shapes and boards from the slater / lost / js / etc etc
Even tho your thinking just dump and coat it cause you got it at a bargaij for 50$
just use ya kiteboard for kiteing keeps the surfboard for surfing.
Only exceptions ive found so far is foamys with fcs2/futures boxes but then your left with why would ya (for me it was a space issue) if you live indoors or even if ya dont just use ya kiteboard.
You can reinforce a marshmellow all ya want but at the end of the day its still a marshmellow
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, what both of you said about strength is probably true. I decided to not buy that board - especially after I remembered that I have an old kite-specific Slingshot Celeritas board that I could pick up and use. I was never a big fan of that board but it will probably serve me a lot better than a surfboard that could break at any time.
Thats my js black baron 2.1 just a few days ago only used for surfing not even sure how i did that to the stringer its actually a section between where my feet are ment to go about 30cms above the tailpad so yea the latest modern shapes can hardly be surfed net alone kited on i dont have the lightest of footwork but im not throwing it around either
If i was to kite on it even just for 1 hour? I would completely destroy it.
Bit of a dodgey glass job but its the top deck so whatevs

Frustrating but what can you do except repair.
But yeah, I've had to repair kite-specific surfboards so I can easily imagine a regular surfboard getting damaged from kiting.
On the Slingy board, perhaps mess with the fin setup. Sometimes it'll fix whatever you hate about the board.
Try a small fin in the middle or large them all for more control. Just borrow of friends then you can buy whatever works.

Thanks for the suggestions!
I think the reason I never liked that board much may have to do with the construction. It is the Aviso carbon version of the Slingshot Moonshine Celeritas (5'4"). That Aviso-made board is admittedly super strong and will probably last into the next century, but whether due to the material or the shape, I found it too fast and too bouncy in chop. I remember that on large waves with chop I sometimes lost my edge and ended up straightening out and shooting out into the flats in front of the wave.
On the other hand, my skills have progressed in the years since I last rode that board, so I might be able to ride it better now. I'll see - and I'll play around with the fin setup as well as you suggested. That's not a bad idea.
