Read below the Kiteboarding Australia media release regarding the advocacy work we did with Kiteboarding New South Wales:

“We are pleased that Transport for NSW was open to hearing the views of Kiteboarding Australia and actioned a roll back in lifejacket regulation so quickly. Mandating life jackets for all kiteboarders in ‘open waters’ put our members at risk” said Alexandra Lockie, General Manager of Kiteboarding Australia.

There was a large public outcry when the Maritime Safety Regulations during their routine 5 yearly re-write were changed to require all kiteboarders to wear a lifejacket in ‘open waters’. Kiteboarding Australia had just under 400 people sign an online petition in relation to the new regulations in NSW. That petition highlighted the primary concerns being the safety of kiteboarders in surf.

The speed at which Transport for NSW was willing to revert to the previous position, requiring a kiteboarder is only required to wear a suitable lifejacket when 400m or more offshore, ensures the safety of kiteboarders and other water users. The rollback to the previous position is slated to occur on 1 October 2016, however there may be some delay in the enactment of the relevant rules.

The ability of Kiteboarding Australia to effectively advocate on behalf of kiteboarders relies on support from the kiting community around the country. Lockie commented, “It was apparent in this instance that having a professional, coordinated and measured response to the inappropriate regulation was crucial to convincing lawmakers to reconsider the recent changes and roll back the regulation.”

Kiteboarding Australia currently operates on a shoe string but is having a material impact on the positive development of the sport. In the past 12 months, Kiteboarding Australia has supported the first national series in a number of years, developed accreditation for kiteboarding schools to improve safety and reduce costs for industry and performed numerous advocacy roles in conjunction with their state associations. Lockie explained the financial situation, “As a body that doesn’t have any significant government funding we can act independently in support of kiteboarders. However, the lack of government funding means we need a strong membership base to fund our operations and support our sport!”

Kiteboarding Australia membership includes comprehensive public liability insurance, personal accident insurance, access to events, SportsPass discount program and support to keep beach access, laws and regulation appropriate for kiteboarders. For a limited time only, Kiteboarding Australia is offering a $20 discount on all new memberships purchased before 29 September 2016. Great news! Thanks to all those behind the scenes who lobbied against this. Just in time for summer :)
