The stitching on the overlapping join of two panels on my leading edge is coming undone. It's no where near the bladder access zip so I can't get to it from the inside. How do you resew such a thing? I guess a sailmaker could open the thing right up or is there so clever DIY way to restitch from the outside only?
If needed I could glue the thing together again but would prefer to sew it as original if possible. Any advice or links appreciated.
Ive seen a dude use some tape and staples before and it help up...
Just a bit dodgy though.
Send it to Moti.
Quick turnaround, pro job and cheap...![]()
It's actually a very easy to repair yourself. You can easily hand sew it making sure you MAINTAIN THE SAME FOLD IN THE MATERIAL or any industrial sewing machine can do this repair as it's a straight stitch.
I've repaired many kites opening large sections of the leading edge and never had a problem with this seam, there's really no need to send it away for this simple repair.
Thanks kiter77, hand sewing sounds ideal but I can't find any info on how to sew a join where you can only access one side/ the front. The Wiki pages talk about opening up the leading seam but that sounds like too much work for a hand sew.
Might have to Dacron tape the inside and hope to get through the damn windy holidays before sending it to a pro. If there is a fix I would love to learn it- you only ever think of these things once you need them!
I had a tear on my new kite that was out of reach so required a 30 cm section of the LE to be unstitched so the patch could be made good. I'm pretty good at sewing and have a machine which wasn't handy at the time so I ponied up for a sailmaker.. Cost 30 bucks and he did a better job than I would have, circular stitching on the patch, proper uv stabilized thread, machine resew of the LE.. Maybe I got lucky but for that sort of money and quality its a no brainer for me next time!
Ok, sounds like I will have to wait until after Xmas when a sailmaker reopens. It's going to be 30knots here today and this was my small kite ![]()
Its very easy to stitch from one side, stick the needle in and push it back out a couple of millimeters further on, use your finder to judge where the tip of the needle it is. Hope this helps.
The other option is remove your bladder and if you needle to access the inside, pull the LE out through the zip hole, if done properly you can virtually pull the entire one side of the LE through.
Failing all this, whack an over size patch of dacron over the area in the inside of the LE and that should be enough.
I've done all 3 methods, but all at the same time on the same area and you would have to look really close to find the patch and it is the strongest part of the kite.
Cheers
Rich
Thanks for all advice. The wind was calling and all I had was some ripstop and adhesive so bridged from the outside. It doesn't look great but held up to 25 knots. I will get it professionally restitched and neatly patched later.
