It was the last day off summer on Saturday, and I was thinking that if you live on the east coast and like wind and waves at the same time, this summer's been a little under par. The forecast for the day was a bit dogey, there were a few storms around, and a bit of rain.

Then the skys cleared, the water was warm, there was clean, good sized surf and enough steady wind. Summer 08/09, all is forgiven!

Here's a short clip of the session to see if I can share the feeling...

Hi to Phil who was around that day as well

Very cool - you shared the feeling for sure.
Nice music too, go The 'Finger.

And yeah, what he said, how smooth are those jibes! Blink and you miss.

Sweet.

Looks like Friday might be the last day of summer over here too.

Awesome editing. How do you get the camera rotation - is that some post-processing software or does the camera figure it out on the fly? I haven't seen that before.

That's at Redhead. Just a good tide/swell size combination to have the outer banks working but not closing out. Wind coming over the headland a bit but suprisingly steady. Phil seemed to be sailing a couple of feet downwind of the headland somehow.

Post-processing required. I use VirtualDub and Deshaker from sourceforge.net, but there are commercial alternatives. It does most of the work, but there is tweaking required. The kitecam stuff is unwatchable without it. The board mounted camera seems to look better with a bit of stabilisation so that the board moves up and down with the chop, not the kiter.

Working on a camera mounting system to look down on the back of the board, but it's been too uncomfortatble so far!

The kite camera is a Pentax W20, with a home made mount similar to the "Setting-Up-a-Kite-Camera" article. I've had it for 18 months - still working.

The board camera is new, it's a GoPro Surf Hero wide angle lens one. It has a FCS plug or double sided tape mount. I put a FCS plug on the nose of my surfboard for it.

The good part about it is it only takes a minute to mount the cameras, then you just do what you normally do - they don't get in the way.
