Anyone else had labral tear in hip and had a successful recovery. I realise it cannot self heal and requires surgery.

Iv got torn labrum in both shoulders. It sucks
i haven't had mine repaired yet but with the right exercises you can strengthen the muscles around it and the helps with the subluxation. I'm sure the hip would be similar
Still out there. Been putting up with it a while, trying to do everything, but I have lost range of movement as well as nerve pain. My surfing sux!
Difficult to lift leg to put sock on. Had the x rays. MRI. Ultra sound & just spent another 30 min in a MRI. Some loose cartilage from impact. Have been travelling to a highly recommended sports physician that works with QLD ARL teams. Should narrow options next week......steroid injection or surgery, arthroscope etc. ![]()
How did you do it. I blue mine on a front blind mobe. And the second was on a huge loop
Nothing that exciting... not sure exactly but I have had my knee nearly ram my chin on both landing impacts and also been belted when pushing out through whitewash in large surf..... but....I think I did it at work!
Got the feeling it would be a pretty common kiting injury in either shoulders, hips or knees.

its a common injury in every sport really, crossfit is the worst for it
I had hip arthroscopy last Thursday to remove bone spur from femur (cam impingement) and also clean up the acetabulum. Have ingested more opiates over the past week than Kurt Cobain & Nick Cave combined!
Follow up with Surgeon this week & hopefully start rehab with physio then. Return to water unknown at this stage, I want to get it right before I go back in. Main priority is to get pain free & be able to play with my kids again 3 & 7.
Hopefully this will delay onset of arthritis, unable to say if I will need hip replacement in coming years ie 5, 10, 15 years.
My hip has been giving grief for a number of years however it got decidedly worse over past 12 months. It could do a lot with riding a big board 10ft (ok wrong forum I know) & it pulling on my left leg (goofy footer) & surfing on my back hand 99% of the time - GC points.

Dr Paul Ohmsen (does titans and Gold Coast suns plus lectures everywhere) plus my local dr in Byron Bay. I was interested to see if anyone here had heard of some of the latest injections. The hip clinic in Brisbane treated a relative of a friend and used a non steroidal injection, that has negated or indefinitely delayed the need for an op. Sounds too good to be true. I'm still on Paul's wait list to get detailed MRI results back. He will Let me know alternatives then. I'm taking Celebrex a prescription anti inflammatory. Unfortunately nothing else has seemed to work. Physio said any chance of self improvement/healing can't happen until you address inflammation. Thanks for your story and others that have messaged me.
Interesting read. I am 59 and having been having bad pains for nearly 2 years. 6 months ago I had xrays and ultra sound to check if there was bursitis. Yes there was some and some arthritis. Was advised against the injection and put up the pain, limping and lack of movement which was getting worse. A kite session could see me having difficulty walking for a couple of days. Eventually went to see a specialist. I brought up labral tear and was told I definitely have that but is not trauma but wear and tear and can not be repaired. Had steroid injection yesterday and pain is now bearable and movement is much better. I guess I am heading for a hip replacement in the future.
It is good to know that I was not making the pain up and there is a plan ahead. I plan on continuing to surf and kite in the future but these were starting to feel like things of the past. I had even begun to sell some of my surfboards.
So if you are young a good lesson is to look after your health as it is your biggest asset. When you feel fine you take it for granted. don't.
Just got back surgeon post-op follow up. Got the low down on procedure, he removed 5mm of bone around the femoral head. Another 2 weeks off work. Will see how it goes from there, got another 10 weeks sick leave up the sleeve if I need it.
Still on crutches, start physio rehab in a weeks time. Got the ok to go to hydro therapy pool - can't wait.
Could be 3 or 4 months until back to normal & pain free.
Made the decision to not drink beer until I'm back in the water - great move with the last week of heat. Could murder a 6 pack.
I had the steroid injection today. It's not going to 'heal' anything but may give me some pain free performance back. Interesting conversation re yoga with dr. My hips & legs have always been the least flexible part of my body. Ends up MRI explained why. My femoral bone had a wider point that normaly would stop at a certain flex. But when forced too far caused labral tear. Wide section then impacted cartilage sideways to which it has no resistance damaging joint.
New treatment is called orthokin. Injects your own blood cells into joint repeatedly over a few treatments. Expensive and unproven at this stage. He explained that there are new treatments every year (like phones) and they often end up not being reliable. So it was anti inflammatory, steroid and saline injection for me.
How about this chamber. Just needs an esky inside!

Let us know how you go with the injection. We discussed them and not going that way at this stage.
How do you go sitting in the car up to Southport & back? Sitting is my main issue, particularly getting in/out car. Doesn't help being 6'5 either.

Yes same..... sitting still can feel like a cramp coming on and nerve pain. My car has excellent seats and I'm able to stretch out non driving left leg (automatic) so not as bad as an unsupportive chair. I've actually just replaced bed, my dining chair, and changing TV/lounging body position. Was told to get knee above hip as often as possible, but I find I just have to continually mix it up. Not do any exercise or stretch that pressures it. There is a modern push now with zero rehab, that has had positive results as well. Controversial as it puts a whole industry at risk. The variation of advice is amazing. I have a physio in the family. No treatment I received did anything more than leave me feeling nice (but not better) acupuncture, a range of physio, and massage, and exercise, Pilates, yoga. Let you know in a week. I'm still doing everything but will have a rest from the water for nearly two weeks. Very impressed with dr, worth the drive. His client list is impressive, and he just is a straight shooter, with lots of experience and the right contact referrals. Wait list to get in is biggest downer.
Btw steroid (cortisone) injection was painless, like acupuncture. Local on surface. Watched it flood joint on ultra sound.
Hey Pearl. I've had a laberal tear in the hip/groing for about 10 years now. Started off with soccer and me not letting the healing take its course. A friend of mine in NZ is an orthopedic surgeon and he diagnosed it in about 2 minutes. Basically, surgery is now my only option and from various sources I've heard that there seems to be a huge difference in success based on age. Under 25's have a high rate of recovery, over 25's have a low rate, obviously getting worse the older you get. I had to give up playing about 9 years ago which was really hard as I played at a decent level (was even on Everton's books as a young teen), but it then created a hole that kiting filled. Kiting does seem to annoy it a bit too, but not enough so stop me. I spent about $2500 on physio/treatment in the early days when I should have probably got surgical advice early. Hope you have some success.

Whats this all about?

Crossfit is a sport?
I thought it was a religion like veganism and Pokemon....
Just saw on the news a Gold Coast Suns player was playing in a trial, going for the ball, his foot dug in, hyperextended his knee which dislocated his hip & fractured his pelvis.
Made my eyes water, he has a long recovery ahead, they are not sure if he will play this season.
Now 3.5 weeks post surgery. Had first physio session yesterday, bit sore today & taking it easy.
Had 7 sessions in hydrotherapy pool in past 10 days & mostly off the crutches. Possible return to work next however my job involves fair bit of time in the car & sitting at desks, sitting is not my friend yest.
Have annual boys trip the first weekend in May, it is my goal to be surfing them, that will approx 12 weeks.
Pearl what is the situation post injection?

Feeling better. I initially thought injection didn't work, but took about 4-6 days before I felt results. It has definetly addressed nerve pain in leg and softened any sharp pain from hip. I'm still on Celebrex as well with aim of halving dosage before stopping. Injury is still there but can do everything. Backhand surfing tests it the most; more than kiting. My goal is simply to manage it and continue everything. I spent out of pocket about $700 all up. The high res MRI and detailed report were well worth it. Funny how we spend on a car yet neglect our own body until it fails. Worth doing to know where you're at and what/how to manage better.
Kitelooper my contact is overseas Atm re rehab.
Daz did you have a posterior or anterior style of op. Heard anterior damages nerves and muscles less. waterpolo mates have had a 'birmingham' surfacing and swear by them as well. Walking immediately, back in water when scars were healed. Depends on your prognosis I guess
Anterior. Glad to here the recovery is coming along.
Still on Celebrex as well for another week, I took it for a while about 15 years ago when I hurt my back bodyboarding. I always found it played havoc with my stomach & made hangovers terrible after 2 or 3 beers.
$ wise I'm about $2k out of pocket, which is nothing in the grand scheme of things. 3 or 4 months not drinking will probably cover it
.
I've been researching core strength programs & found a lot of useful information on Pinterest and have saved them. Ie 30 day challenge where you do 3000 squats & 1000 push-ups.

Hey Pearl,
Sorry to hear about your chronic pain relating to your hip.Being 61year old kiting frother ,I have osteoarthritis everywhere in my joints. So far have had my left hip replacement then 12mts later my right knee replacement, still recovering from the knee which takes longer rehabilitation. Was kiting lightly 3 mths after either op.As far as painkillers go 2-3 osteo panadol work.My doctor said can have above every 4 hours if needed without the harmful affects on your guts that say Celebrex or others have.
Sorry the age thing does catch up eventually. So naily kiting tricks make things a lot worse.
Sort of kiting with care these days.
But stoked I still can after two replacements.
Hope you get the right treatment.
Try to get off the Celebrex mate it's no good for your guts.
im going under the knife on the 21st to get my labrum stitched back together. started dislocating in my sleep so thought its time to get it sorted out.
