Anybody know if mexico gets any decent winds for kiting in the surf? Doing a trip based around Puerto Escondido and wondering if i should bring a kite.

Cheers

I came across something about wind in Salina Cruz, and it sounds like Puerto Escondido is not that far away. Its surprising that you can't seem to find much about this area, even though its meant to be very windy.

I think the one thing you can guarantee is if there's good wind, there might not be any gear to hire. I think its a pretty remote area.

Again, I only looked at Salina Cruz because I was trying to find out if there was any place close to Guatemala that I could get to to sail.

It seems to be a surf destination, but I wonder about kiting.

If you are going to be around Puerto you won't have much luck without a good car, good knowledge of the area and good timing. There will be nothing available to hire so you need to bring your gear. Places to kite in Mexico that are good and reliable are in Baja, (with waves on Pacific) and on the Sea of Cortez, and then over on the Caribbean side and gulf. Progresso through to Tulum has good wind at certain times of the year, but not super good waves. Now, Salina Cruz does have wind, the place howls due to it being smack in the narrow corridor (112 miles) of two oceans. Talk about a huge Venturi effect! However, those winds are generally offshore. Salina Cruz is pretty industrial, not the nicest of places. There is a reason why Puerto Escondido gets so big all year round, and that is because of that wind generates it own system and whips up the surf constantly.
I am the keenest of kiters, and have planned more kite trips lately than surf trips....but if I was headed to Puerto I would just focus on the quality surf. Been there many times and have never left there without getting epic waves. Have fun!

I went to Mexico in December: Peurto escondido, big 6+ foot waves, not a skerik of wind. Zipolite just south of there is AWESOME. Laid back little surf town, beach bars with hammocks and reggae bands, clothing optional with occasional hot naked babes walking the beach, spend a few days there at least. No kiting though. Nearby Muzante is nice too, more of a sheltered beach so safer for swimming.

Tulum, it was relentlessly blowing 20 -25 knots 24/7. Sloppy waves, but defo the place to go kiting.

Kiting in tulum is epic. kited in front of the 13th century tulum ruins back in 2008, unforgetable!
Belize (not far away) has also got some epic kiting. PM me if you want any info

Hi mate,

Was in Mexico the January this year. West coast for waves, i didn't ride there however from what i heard they have a few months of great wind then nothing. East coast was great for kiting. Cozumel and Isla Mujures were my favourites. Tulum has kickers however all the swell is on the west coast. If you need more info Pm me, amazing place to ride and to visit.

Enjoy!
