Just got back from a week kiting in Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka. If you're looking for a new kite destination, this is it! MASSIVE lagoons and too many to choose from, windy every day and completely uncrowded. I recommend kite surfing Lanka - great accommodation with heaps of options for all budgets, brilliant home cooked meals and they can organise boat trips to take you to the best kite locations around. Dil and Leo are awesome and all of their staff are super friendly. Can't wait to go back!!

Yep I totally agree, I spent a few days kiting there. The wind was in every day and the islands I got to kite were truly awesome, I highly recommend it.

Interested in destination. Is there surf as well or just flat water?

kited there for 4 months last year.

theres better spots around the world trust me.

very gusty wind the kite schools are a monumental rip off. some chargeing 40 euro a night accomodation to sleep i a shack where you could be sleeping in a luxurious house for 5 euro a night if that. the whole islam prayer stuff at 4am gets a little tedious after a few months for food you basicly gotto drive to puttalam can take an hour depending on conditions. locally you should be able to source perso melons wood apples little bannanas few other tasty things but not much. maybe 6 vegetables and 4 fruits. as far as meat goes its basicly fish. which isnt to bad but you are better off getting a local to buy for you. didnt matter what time i tried to buy they only ever want to sell me the dodgey ones hahaha send in ya driver and he comes back with one twice as big much better tasteing.

anyways yeah its good. but with the amount of kiteschools and resorts opening up its basicly ruined before its time. everyone seems to say its better then what it really is. i had the luxury of meeting some "higher up" people in the scheme of things as i was looking at purchaseing property up there.

if i were going to go back to sri lanka id look at going to mannar rather then kalpitiya

if anyone wants to know more on my 4 months there feel free to ask. theres a very intresting knitting circle sorta thing going on there to many schools to soon i believe. everyones been swept into a bit of a frenzy trying to get rich off there new found tourism but after ALOT of research first hand experience and ... man i really looked into it hahahaha had meetings with alot of intresting people. anyways!
i decided against it theres growth dont get me wrong but idiots are talking about 6 star resorts etc hahahaha whatever its all a hell of alot of trickery i think alot more has been promised then what ever will eventuate.

either way as kiters we just want cheap accomodation cheap food and clean wind. the accomodation is great if you live with a local the food is terrible hahaha i mean come on i can make better fish curry :P sometimes thell secretly have a boar going on get apart of that if you can. and the wind is honestly A little gusty. dont get me wrong its ****ing great for me as far as kiteing goes im just a beginer on a bow kite i loved it was 18-28 knots every day think it only rained for 4 days in the 4 months aswell. the little lagoon kappaladi does seem to dry up but least the winds a little less gusty down there.

dribble dribble not sure what to say just ask i guess and ill give a slightly pessimistic view :)

I'm going to Arugam Bay in the South East of Srilanka on a surf & Kitesurf trip at the end of next month, should be a win win I think,I've been told the wind comes through around midday due to the heat, like our North nor'easter in Spring on the east coast of ozz. looking forward to a different destination for this time of year...

Check out coast around anawatuna if there is no swell up there, and you go for a drive. I never saw another kite apart from helping some locals try and fly an old kit they had inherited. I found the food, people, and place fantastic. Had some monster swells with no one else in the water. Never went up north. Beware of euro holidays.... Can get busy with prices skyrocketing. Always busy on the roads, get a driver. The devastation after the sunami is uncomprehendable. Couple that with the ending of the war, and the local s deserve some tourism success. I had a completely different experience to Kozzie, but was chasing waves not in a flat water kite camp.

Hello, I m leo the owner of kitesurfinglanka.
Have you heard that there is great wind in Sri Lanka between May and October and between december and february ?

Check out www.kitesurfinglanka.com/ or just visit us in North West Sri Lanka!!

We offer kite lessons, rental, kite safaris and trips, accommodation, great food and a chilled out ambience.

There is a choice of where to kite, there are lagoons- small, big and enormous. There is miles of coastline with shore break to explore, allowing a choice of long downwinders, flat water or ocean- you choose. We do kite trips to perfect spots.

We offer kite lessons with our experienced and friendly IKO qualified instructors. We have a perfect spot for teaching, in a safe lagoon with waist deep water, we use good quality equipment and have a safety boat.

The trade wind blows nicely from May till October, last season there was just 5 days of no wind in 5 months... check out the statistics here www.windguru.cz/fr/historie.php? ... &model=gfs

We offer a range of accommodation in our camps and our catering team provides great food served in a buffet style so you will not go hungry after a day of kiting.

Here are a few videos from our kitespots:
