Hiya,

I'm interested in a not too exxy kiting holiday late in the year, depending on a shoulder op it should be around sept?

My wifey and kids are coming too (aged 5 and 2) any suggestions for locations that will keep them happy as well? Wifey hates wind (yeh I know... not good) so somewhere with a choice of crankin wind locations and a sheltered beach for the fam both nearby to accomadation would be spot on.

Cocos seems an ok option but I'd prefer a few user friendly waves as flat water gets a bit boring after a while (call me weird).

Sigh... If I have to kite perfect flat water every day then that's the kind of sacrifice I will make

Mondo bizarro!! Rotto would be sweet but you have to sleep with some craggy old codger Rotto Authority folks to even get a booking these days [}:)] which means taking off farther afield.

Suggestions on wind seasons and estimated knots would be handy.

Cheers.

Getfunky, Good topic... my kids are 8 and 6, wife can scuba but not kite so I will be interested to see what suggestions come up too.

I would have thought taking the whole fam to the Cocos would be exxy.

Hey Funky

Le Morne in the SW of Mauritius is a great location in Sept. Check the wind stats here:

http://www.club-mistral.com/en/destinations/weather/9?From_Day=01&To_Day=30&To_Month=09&To_Year=2007&submit=search

The Indian Resort is a top spot right in front of kiting paradise. Even is the wind is blasting 20 knt plus the pool area is calm and perfect for wife and kids.

There is a mixture of flat water and waves so it will keep beginners to experienced kiters very happy.

You may be able to get better package deals from Western Australia - prices are not exactly cheap and it is a bit of a haul to get there from the East Coast, but overall it is very good value for money. Check out the family rooms just a few paces from where you launch.

For more info read this article or PM for more info.

Cheers

Ian

PS> I'm scheduling a return trip as my trip in October 07 was awesome.

Dunno why i didn't think of Kal??

Nam is not the go for us. Speant a couple of weeks there on honeymoon in 2001 and couldn't get outta there quick enough. Hard not to generalise about the whole country as there is a least 3 differant cultures all goin on in Vietnam (Nth, middle and sth) but we got pretty ordinary and often hostile treatment (especially in Hue) most of the time... Bloody overated compared to most of asia... hmm does have wind though

Ta for suggestions fellas.

You can't go past Coral Bay if you need to keep the wife and kiddies happy. It has the greatest beach for kids, the best snorkeling and most of all the hotest backpackers!!

Coral Bay is starting to shape up well... What's the wind linke in Sept-Nov?

Better pack my mirror sunnies and bruising repair ointment (for when wifey gives me a backhander). Bl00dy 20/20 eyesight can be a real problem with cute backslappers soaking up the all-over tan!!

The backpackers in Coral Bay truelly are reason enough to holiday up there! The wind is usually pretty good that time of year. Check out the last months Kiteboader mag as it had a good article on Exmouth which is only a short drive up the coast from Coral Bay. If you have a 4WD there are so many beaches to explore.

We have a great spot here on the beach , we pump up right out front . 9m kite from about 11am on. Heaps off restraunts and bars . Great spot for partner in mind. Mui Ne Vietnam. Getting a cab to drop us up the bay for a downwinder latter on this morning.
Cheers Taxi.

Hey Funky, never been there but I'd hazard a guess the wind there is nuclear around then. If you need a kite buddy and someone to take the blame for looking at backpackers I might just have to go and stay there at the same time . CB has been on my list to visit for a while now, and I've just got my PADI too.

Kiting in Coral Bay is very tide dependant (shallow coral), there is not much beach to launch on, heaps of people in and out of the water and lots of boat traffic although that may have changed with the building of the boat ramp further south.

Kiting is still possible but it is mostly flat water as the waves are about 1.5kms out breaking on shallow, sometimes exposed, coral. Not very friendly when you are on your own. The big bay just South of Paradise Beach looks good but with limited access. 4WD at the very least.

My suggestion would be Exmouth as it has the best combination of flat water and waves and a BIG range of accomodation options. The snorkling is way better and there's more sea life including dugongs, turtles and humpback whales. The downside is you have to drive some distance (can be upto 60-70kms) to various beaches/bays.

Can't beat a holiday in your own backyard...

Check out my profile for some pics from last September in the Exmouth region!

Might just be the go old bean - especially If I get to goggle and you get slapped!!

When are you in town for the next downwinder? Wanna do a longer Leighton to Brighton session?

Actually considering how toxic I still feel post-BDO (free beers all day ) that is ambitious even thinking it.

Fingers crossed the graphs get it together for the weekend...

Looks like I'm shot until after Kitestock, unless there is wind on Sunday and I ditch the planned Sunday sesh. Leighton to Brighton sounds good, maybe even to Trigg if we point downwind a bit sharper than usual. Or start earlier...
