Hey there

I am going to be in Arnhem Land (Cobourg Peninsula and Nhulunbuy)in late Aug early Sep.

Does anyone have information on locations to kite ? Aside from the crocs and sharks, it looks like there might be some half decent locations.

Both are awsome country but dude, full of nasty crocs. You'll need boat support 'cause if you hit the water you'll want to be out really quick. I was at Coburg a few weeks back for work and as we flew over the beaches, I saw some really awsome kiting spots. I asked the Parks guys to swing by the beaches on the way back to the airstrip and check said beach. There was actually waves and man there was plenty wind. An hour flight back to Darwin in a cesna, and Darwin had nothing. This time of year the wind always seems to blow up there.

Kited Gove a few times, less stress worring about bities at the town beach and like Coburg, seems to have loads of wind. Out the back is great swell to play on (with heaps of wind) but no waves. We used to kite at the spit near the mine plant but I think access is impossible now, but if keen try the sailing club.

Head over to Cape Arhnem, got some waves and wind there but watch out for the big bities. 4WD only, but lots of fun! Saw some sharks there too!

The NT coast is really hard core for the really keen and I've seen big chomping handbags there that seem not to be scared of you or boats at all.

But, August/September isn't problerly going to me much wind. We tend to get seabreezes by then, so the wicked sou'easters are few and far between by then.

Good luck, Gove would be the better choice of the two.

cheers,

Robbie

ps fishing is awsome

Nhulunbuy is a No Go, I worked there for a couple of months last year. The amount of crocs you see swimming past beach would put you off for sure.

But it's the ones you don't see that are more worrying.

I remember going down to the Barge landing and some of the local kids had stoned a croc to death... That was pretty crazy!

Edit: I was thinking Numbulwar, not Nhulunbuy.

Nhulunbuy is awesome!

Took the kite over for 1 day there and got a pretty good session in down near woody's island.
Go low tide though as the water is nice and clear at low tide and down near woddy's island is not as safe as the town beach...

From memory anywhere outside of the town limits a permit from the lands council will also be required

outside town down the highway until Rainbow cliffs you only need dhimurru permit, which does cost money, a year permit was $100, but may be cheaper for a couple of days...
Dhimurru just requires you to pay fee, no application or permission from elders required.

Puetz, just looking around, fishing, camping etc etc. A part of the country I haven't been to yet.

Will likely leave the kite at home, but definitely take the fishing gear and camera.
