Massivly over a disspointing season in Melbourne and planning some kite trips for the year.
Where are the best places in the world to kite from April to May?
Places with a nitelife would be a bonus...
Considering Borocai, Mauritous, or Thailand as would prefer not to have to travel too far to get there.
Same thing here. Seriously over a non-season on the Gold Coast and hoping to go kiting somewhere between Australia and Europe in late April.
Was thinking about Thailand (but probably sucks in April) or Oman.
Any suggestions?
Hi mate,
If your willing to cover the air miles then Egypt is a great choice April-September. Perfect flat water and consistent winds, it's hot and once your there cheap. Hotels right on the kite beaches, charge about $100 a week all-inclusive including beer.
Most of the progression DVD's were filmed there, so you can check out the sea conditions. I've gone there several times in peak season and never been fighting for space on the water.
If you want waves Cape Verde' season runs from Feb- May, and if the swells up, you can at least marvel at the break at Punta Preta, even if your not ready to have a go at riding it.
Canary islands are another good choice, in particular Fuertaventura, which will give you a good mix of both waves and flat water.
This place looks Awesome. www.planetkitesurfholidays.com/resorts/egypt/hurghada

Yea stayed in Hurgahda two years ago and had a blast. The hotels beach bar was only 30 metres from the launch land area. Happy times!!
Thanks for the suggestions guys!
I checked out Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, and Oman as best I could on the interwebs and they all seem to suck in April, more or less. I'm not really keen on renting a 16m, praying for wind, and then ending up drinking on the beach instead of kitesurfing. I can do that on the Gold Coast. I'd prefer to feel overpowered on my 9m. :-o
Hawaii, California, Caribbean, Capo Verde, Spain, or the UK unfortunately are not really stop over destinations on the way to Germany. :-)
Doesn't mean I wouldn't want to go there. Next time.
So it looks like Egypt is the only real option here. It's not really on the way either, but maybe I can find some cheap flights.
Did I overlook the perfect option?
Hey Mitohund
IMO Egypt is definitely the best option in April and close to Europe. Egypt is actually closer to Germany than Perth is to Sydney.
There are loads of both Charter and scheduled flights running from Egypt to Europe, so cheap flights are common if you look in the right place.
If Cairo airport suits you best then Ras Sudr or Zaffarana are the best spots, roughly 2.5 hours drive from the airport. Ras Sudr is where Progression Advanced was filmed, and also where I learnt to kiteboard. I can recommend both spots for flat water and lots of space.
If Hurghada airport suits you then stay at the Magawish hotel in Hurgahda. You can literally fall out of your room onto the kite lagoon. Abu Soma, El Gouna and Safaga are all rated as better than Hurghada and are within a 1 hour transfer from the airport. All of the above spots have hotels and a kite club/school within walking distance - No driving once you are there!
You'll probably be sorting your flights out yourself, but I can recommend www.waveriders.biz to sort out you transfers from the airport and hotel booking. Waveriders are based in the UK and specialize in kiteboarding holidays.
Have a good one where ever you end up!!!
Sunny coast is good in April. best time of year to coincide wind with waves.. Guaranteed!
(Guaranteed is limited by the legal liabilities wind clause limitiation foundation.)
I was at Ras Sudr for 2 weeks last June. Loved it. Great flat water site.
I've got 3 weeks booked at Greens Lagoon Resort, Ras Sudr for June this year. Final payment due April. I'm a bit nervous about the political situation. The Australian government web site has warnings advising don't go and warning of terrorist attacks at tourist locations. I've got Cape Flattery as a back up plan but am currently undecided.
If you decide to go to Ras Sudr for one week or 3 weeks make sure you time your trip for the correct tides in the natural lagoon.
Wind Stats for Ras Sudr
I have been in Noosa for 2 weeks in April a few years ago. Got out 0 times. Well worth dragging the kite stuff up there.
Not.![]()
KR
I would save some cash and head to Queensland ....
The trade winds are usually starting late April - June but you have to go further North than Noosa/ Sunshine coast ie: Cairns, Yorkeys and into the yonder
try these guys: www.australiankitesurfari.com.au/
And you will be supporting the local economy, they have a had a pretty tough time up that way lately.
I have heard great things about Egypt as well, ( Sadr, Moon bAy ) however given the political situation and associated vacuum I would be staying clear for a while, you dont want to end up on the news in an orange jumpsuit.
Even the police association are setting fire to stuff there now ( THe interior Ministry building ) as they demand an increase in pay and conditions.
Thanks for the great feedback.
Egypt looks great but I think ill avoid the scud missiles this year.
So I think I'm going to give Townsville a go. If theres no wind I can allways head up to Port Douglas and go diving/rafting.
Tempted to do Boracay but wind looks 50/50- airfares are cheap like $1,200 so might still go there if wind forecast looks aaiighhtt.
yay for Townsville!
some wicked spots and events happening in April.
give us a bell when you coming up to Townsville and we show you the best spots mate!
PNG is an amazing experience with some of the best conditions you will find- flat water, waves, reefs, 25knts warm winds and warm water and so much to explore..
Would have to agree that you need to head further north than the Sunny Coast from now on. I'm in Hervey Bay, about 2 1/2 hours north of the Sunny Coast, and your best chance of decent winds in this area from now on are when the northerlies hit Double Island point. Try Bretto at Windswell in Port Douglas for some great surfaris amongst the islands.
Heading up to Hervey Bay next weekend. Is Double Island Point near the ferry over to Fraser Island? or is it a little south of Rainbow Beach? The SE winds (20-25 knots) look awesome, but are they any good at Double Island Point?
