Anyone had much experience kiting and surfing in Mauii in August?
I'm going for a friends wedding, which unfortunately is on Wailea, the opposite side of the island to kite beach. Is the SouthWest/West side off shore and unkiteable in August? Does this mean though, that this side would have offshore waves for surfing all day?
My ideal situation would be close to a/some surfing spots before the wind blows, then be able to wave kite when the wind does blow :-) If I had to choose I'd prefer somewhere that is good for surfing over somewhere that is good for kiting. Happy to bus to a kite spot, if that is an option!

Huh, snap. We're thinking of being there around the same time too... all I've read says it should be good wind, but flat water. Waves come through in January...
Crazy thing is the wind bends around Mt Haleakala and blows cross on down the Wailea/Kihei "west" Coast
at the same time it's blowing cross on on the "North shore" kite beach side. The two coasts are oriented roughly at 90 degrees to each other!
With a bit of South swell ( likely in August ) the Kihei side can have a fun kiting wave. Up towards Lahaina there seems to be more of an offshore on some waves there.
Easy drive between the two coasts.
You can ride some waves in Kihei but if you want to kite for good the kitebeach is 20mins from Wailea!nocomments about this spot
No North Shore swell that time of the year, just the occasional south swell but don't count on it.
South side is kite-able but not as windy as Kahului.

Nah gotta disagree, sometimes Kihei can be a few knots more as the wind wraps around the volcano. August and September always have good consistent winds as the trades have kicked in, the winds come like clock work every day at about 11:00am and blows until the sun goes down, but very little swell On either side.

I've done a bit of research,and due to the smaller wave season it looks better to focus on a few kiting sessions. Kilhei actually works better for us because the wedding is in Wilea. Can you just kite anywhere along this coast near Kilhei/Wilea?
What wind strength is typical? I have an 11 and a 7 meter, don't know if I'll have room for both
