Hi there,
going to Nelson Bay and Batemans Bay for one week each and am wondering if there are good kitesurfing areas for beginners. I.e. We had our lessons and now want to train with our own gear - but are not yet really stable on the boards.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated - have been told both areas are not suitable but can't change our destinations. Definitly do not want to go into the wave until we have managed flatwater. If there are no suitable areas let me know too - last thing I want is to get the family into trouble when starting out.
We can always take the windsurfing boards instead which we have been using for much longer ;)

Grew up in the Port Stephens/Nelson Bay area. Take the Sail boards. You will be hard pressed to find a good spot as a beginner. Tanilba Bay at low tide is ok but hard on the feet (shells etc). Jimmies Beach on the North side of bay can be great but, again not good for beginners as the prevailing winds are usually offshore this time of year. All other locations in the area are good as a beginner if the swell is very small but from the look of the low off the coast it aint going to be small for awhile.
ps big currents in the bay, be warned.![]()
I would give Bagnalls beach a go, it works with the NE seabreezes. Launching is a little tight due to trees, but heaps of room to play on the water. Its a great place to learn and progress your skills, most locals have done this before moving onto other spots that present a challenge. If you want the easy option go windsurfing but if you want to use your new found skills and toys give kiting a go.
Enjoy your stay,
Baz.
