I'm thinking about a kitesurfing holiday mid year for a couple of weeks. I'm an intermediate level rider, will be travelling with a mate and want to keep costs reasonable. I'm thinking somewhere with a bit of variety - flat water and ocean maybe with a kite school nearby to learn some new tricks. Anybody been anywhere cool lately? Im in perth so thinking maybe SE asia somewhere??

PNG! Fly from Cairns to Port Moresby on Air Niguni for like $400 return. The give a 50kg baggage allowance for kiters and surfers. I'm working on something for around the same time. Maybe june/july.

Or you could go to Rotto and spend 1 night for the same money.

Have you thought about Vietnam - some good conditions there for both flat water and waves with a school etc. Let me know if you want more info...

Vietnam sucks. The water is filthy. I have photos. Grey muck with dead fish snakes rates pig heads lungs millions of bottles etc and it smells funny. I'll put the photos up when I can. Didn't rate the place at all. It's not that cheap everything is in us dollars, the people hate us. Nonwonder we bombed the shiiiiiii t out of their place. And extra charge for everything. It's not easy if you bringing your gear. Mui ne is 4-7 hours by bus depending on traffic - the highway is a shhhty old road most of the way. Didn't rate it all. Oh and lots of learners and chop. If you like chop. But on the upside free wifi everywhere and fake rolex's are about 30-200 bucks ha what a rip off. Don't make a trip there just to find the water is better in aust

wow its sounds like you had a good time!.
I spent a month in vietnam last year. I think it's an awesome country that has a hell of a lot to offer for the traveller. The kiting there can be awesome too!

May-Nov tradewinds blow 18-25 all day and night. Check out Land of Lahara vid. They took a charter boat out of Pt. Moresby for like 10 days. It works out to be pretty pricey (like $400/night) but there are other options too. If you are willing to put some cash toward transport (i.e. hire a boat) than you can get any type of riding you are after.

It looks sick. If there are a few guys planning on going around the same time we should try to pool resources and hire transport. I'm going to fly to Cairns form Perth on points and fly Air Niguni from there.

If anybody has any first hand info or recomendations I'd like to hear it. PM or post it as it seems appropriate.

Hi,

intheloop is the official partner of the Surfing Association of PNG and we do kitesurfing trips to PNG.

There are two nice options to go there and kite.

Safe and best option is to go on a boat and cruise along the reef and islands from Moresby ( north and south) for 7 days or from the Trobiand Islands/Milne Bay area back to Port Moresby on a 2 week trip.

wind and swell is decent from mai to october 18-30knts and heaps of different wave spots that we have sussed out. . You have heaps of reef, flatwater, islans, ship wrecks and village you will visit.

It is not so easy to just go backpacking or go live in the villages in PNG.
You have to be careful and local knowledge is vital!

Other issues like fees to use beaches, land and waters come up in PNG! The land owners take care of that and this is something you have to take into conisideration when going to places as well as risk of malaria and hep.

The advantage of doing a boat cruise is that you do not have to deal with any of that and can just enjoy the places you will visit, kite, dive and fish.

The boat trip is all inclusive with 3 meals a day. Awesome food!

Check out land of lahara or the current oz kiteboarder where michael bell has written 6 pages about the 7 day trip we haqve done last year in october. kiteworld has got more info in the travel guide.

any questions please PM us.

cheers

Well, I'm sold.

Time to submit an application to the Minister of Finances and Social Planning. Do you do a non-kiting partner rate? I'm not sure if she'd want to go but I'd better have done the research anyway.

I'm thinking something around July-Sept depending on work.

I need to get a copy of Land of Lahara.

the PNG experiment does sound pretty good.
If you were coming from WA, would you fly straight to Port Moresby or fly through to QLD first? Just checked flights and its about $1300 return.
How long does the trip go for, dates, best time to go and prices please

hi mate,
Michael Bell and Matt Wesson flew from Perth to Cairns and then 120mins from Cairns to POM where you jump on the boat.

Trip goes for either 7days ( like land of lahara dvd) or a 10day trip from the milne bay/ trobiand islands back to morseby.
heaps of waves, flatwater and epic downwinders through reef..

Best time is tradewind season from may to october- consistent 20-30knts, july, august, september strongest months.

Still free spots for end of July and August trips.
PM me if you are interested.

Peace*

Hi Andrash
wind is consistent from may -october blowing 20knts around midday increasing to 30knts in arvo. its a nice warm breeze and you can kite in t-shirt and boardies

we have several awesome wave locations like Hula Village or Reefs along the Coast and a few awesome wave spots in the Trobiand Islands.

I would definately recommend an organised live aboard boat trip for your first visit to PNG. there are heaps of options if you are living there as you have local knowledge and your own transport, but without that you will be lost.

Add in the problem of a large LNG project happening in Port Moresby at present and you will struggle to find accomodation or transport at all let alone at a reasonable cost.

Boats give you the best options too. If there is no wind then the diving/fishing will blow you away.

you right on all the above. Isnt it always the best to travel somewhere with local knowledge. It is def needed in PNG and having back up and support from the SAPNG ( Surfing Assc) and the locals makes a huge difference.
Another important aspect is landowners who have to be paid as well as reef tax..

SAPNG is one of the leading bodies in building Surfing in the whole South Pacific regions with strong partnerships in Oz and Japan. They have now included Kiting into their Surfing program which is great for building a sustainable future for kiting tourism in PNG.

We have chosen to start the commercial trips on a boat to make it as pleasant, safe and explorative as possible.

Again the country is one of the most amazing places i have ever visited with perfect conditions for kiting, so if everything around that is nicely set up you can just lean back in your harness and enjoy the ride..
