Hey, has anyone Kitesurfer the south or southwest coast of Portugal in July/ August - any tips on good wind and wave spots?

hi chill out, Sagres is the place to be south west Portugal, thermal north wind blows most afternoons in the summer, on the west facing shore it's cross on from the right with waves on the southern facing its off shore flat water. Loads of beaches to explore going north, beautiful quiet even in august or if the wind goes ballistic you have a safe lagoon for free style Lagos," Ria Alvor " have a look on google maps. I am 2 hours north in Lisbon, here with have Guincho 30 mins drive away, same north wind and waves but better waves later in the summer early autumn.
hope this helps

Viana do Costello - obitur? Camping ground- just south of the big rock groin.

This is a great spot to spend a period of time if you are chasing wind in portugal. Waves were generally small, but you will get consistent wind and both your misses and yourself will feel safe and comfortable in this spot.

If I was doing your trip I would book ahead, go straight to this campsite. Get info about other good spots from the many euros who will also be camping there and choose your own adventure from there.

Don't rush you departure from this spot....

Thanks all for the advice. Have found a place to stay near Sagres (salema) so will work up the west coast from there. I have kited Guincho before peewee, so will look to get one or two days there also. Cascais is a favourite spot for us.

On your way up the coast pop past Vila Nova d Milefonte, a tranquil estuary beach town, can get a lovely wave around rivermouth. And on your way out of Lisbon to Cascais try tea at the Pasteriche de Belhem, awesome patisseries. Careful with the rips up from Sagres, south side a bit easier.

I will be there in August/ Sept, can't wait. Will be in Spain before that, so my summer here is looking pretty good! Thanks for the info you all, will be staying near Guincho for the first week then traveling around. Hope to catch some of you on the way ;)

I will be in Spain & Portugal in July '16, was wondering if there is a local site the equivalent of seabreeze to show when and where the wind is blowing - or is it consistent enough that I needn't bother?

Also, is kite gear available for hire at most kite beaches? I will be going for a long trip in mostly non-kiting locations and would prefer to not lug gear around with me.

I found this one useful when I was there last August www.windfinder.com/forecast/guincho?utm_source=www.windfinder.com&utm_medium=web&utm_campaign=redirect
And nothing is for certain there. I arrived in Tarifa only to get completely skunked for wind. Still a great city to see. Rentals are available in some places, but all the really good more remote spots there is nothing. I am still uncertain though if I would cart all my gear again through Europe, but saying that I scored in more remote places, especially in northern Spain.

Hey chill out , I will be there for a month in the summer . coming in to Porto then hanging around Viana de Costello , kiting , and if there is any swell
surfing further south .
Spent quite a bit of time in Portugal over the years and enjoyed surfing supertubos in Peniche in the early 80,s when a dozen crew on it was a crowd .
In the far South West it reminds me of Margs SW where I live . Was there two years ago and it is still pretty much the same .
Be prepared for chilly water ! It has a job nudging 19 !
Great people , food , beer ......and you are not regulated almost death like we are getting now in OZ .
can not wait .

Hey Expatruds, you forgot to mentioned the wine! Portugal has the best cheap wine, meaning for even 2 or 3 Euro you get a great bottle of wind from the Duro Valley. I was quite surprised how good it was as I never see it for sale in other countries. I asked the waiter why that is so, and he said that Portugal drinks more than 75 percent of it's wine leaving very little for export. Porto is one of my favorite cities in Europe ;)

Hey, what are the winds like over autumn\winter? I'm assuming it's all frontal driven ?Do you get much wind from say Sept\Oct to Dec ?

From my experience Sept/Oct is very calm. Very good though for surfing. In winter it rains a lot, wind is frontal driven but I don´t know how reliable or predictable it is.
The main wind period is May to August. I am going this July. Last time I was there was 20 years ago and I was a windsurfer. I spent a lot of time at Guincho during those years and love the place. Ahhh...and the custard tartes... (called "Pasteis de Nata")

I will be in Algarve from around 18th - 22nd of July. I've been in touch with a kite camp in Rio de Alvor. Has anyone here been there for kiting? Any other standout spots around there that are superior as a base? I will have a car to explore, but will be renting gear.
