Going to Cairns for a week - I am currently doing water starts but I need more lessons. Who is the best Kitesurfing school in the area?

It's Extreme in Cairns hooked me up with a lesson and gear, but they seem to be closed now. Also that was in 1999.

i'm not much help.

Luke from "kiteboarding cairns Australia" is such a cool guy. Google it! You won't regret it

+ 1 for Luke and Andy @ Kiteboarding Cairns, they are well experienced and been locals there for a long time. They'll not only teach you to ride but also ensure that you're a safe, competent and independent kiter, which is rare in this industry.

I know. My partner had lessons with both WindSwell and Luke.

Damn, I wish those guys would open a store in Townsville

+1 for Port Douglas, I was there last year for a few weeks kiting and they all seemed like nice enough lads and a really good spot for learning (shallow enough to stand for the most part) and an easy walk up the beach while you are still losing ground.

Sure beats learning in Melbourne in winter!

I just returned from cairns.

The teacher at KBC was a disappointment.

When I was out in the water he was often looking at his mobile phone on the beach.

When I crashed the kite in the water and I came in he picked up the kite and slammed the kite on the beach and started swearing.

He was very angry - maybe he got some bad news on his mobile phone. Don't go to KBC in Pam Cove

KBC operate out of Palm cove - it is in deep water and rocky underfoot - not good for learning - I wouldn't recommend them.

I then went to Windswell in Port Douglas and Jimmy was an amazing teacher he had me up and riding after he taught me good bar control.

Port Douglas is shallow and protected and great for learning, Brett was also great and they are really professional - I was on a high after Jimmy got me up for my first ride - awesome.

Christian,

I can't agree with your recommendation to use KBC in Cairns

I followed you recommendation and it was a disaster

The KBC teacher was talking on their mobile phone as I was learning- the teachers attitude was impatient and angry - yelling - swearing etc

That's no way to teach.

KBC teach at Palm Cove which is also rocky underfoot and it has deep water - no good for me - I am a beginner

Yes Jimi and Bretto were great - real professionals. Windswell at Port Douglas rocks

The KBC teacher at Palm Cove was looking at his mobile phone while I was out 75 metres trying to waterstart - that is negligent - anything could have happened to me out there and he wouldn't have seen it. Drowning doesn't take long - just get knocked unconscious and thats it.

Just to give you guys the heads up. The instructor that was teaching the person is no longer working for us. This incident was a disappointment to us also. We have contacted the student , apologised to him for his experience, and refunded him for the lesson. The instructor was dismissed from working with us as soon as we found out about this. We are passionate and professional about the way we teach our students and will do our upmost to provide the best service possible.
