In case you haven't seen em yet, some of us are starting ot get some pretty cool photos from the Pentax Optio W30 and CamRig setup. Still a bit of tweaking to do to get the shutter speed and program settings right but we're getting there.

Here's a gallery of some shots from Wednesday afternoon's session at Long Reef.

Email me if you want some tips on what I've learned so far.

Cheers,

Rob

video from a camera on a helmet is a waste of time..... viewing makes you feel sick and its very hard to work out whats going on. Bit like Blair Witch project on speed.

The pics and video from the camera on the kite look much better in my humble opinion.

Zola, Nice shots mate! I heard there were some all-time waves in Perth recently. Looks like you nailed it! I think once I crank up the shutter speed (i was accidentally using the "Landscape" mode on the last session) my shots will be better.

I find also that you get the most interesting shots with the kite close to the water, but that also has its obvious risks...

Vader, I did try a video session -- the quality is awesome, but as BigMark1000 says, it's pretty much a waste of time and will make you ill, unless you have a special plugin from QuickTime Pro that will auto adjust the kite movement to keep the kiter in zero motion.

I have seen a few good vids -- There is a cool video if you go on GoogleEarth and then look at one of the YouTube videos that's linked to Broughton Island up near Hawks Nest. Nice work but again you have to have the QTPro plug in or it's just not worth the effort.

Cheers,

Rob

I set the camera to sports mode with infinity focus - this helps reduce blurred images.

Good stuff! Some really interesting angles. Be great to see some big turns and jumps in decent surf on a sunny day. Keep them coming lads.

Also don't zoom right in either, you will get a lot more camera shake that way & if it isn't a nice sunny day you will get blurred images due to the longer exposure time. I find that zooming in not quite half zoom give you the best result. You get yourself a little closer to the action that way as well.

I shot a short video last year with the W30, you can view it here: www.markg.com.au Just click on 'The Lyall Sessions" link on the right hand side of the page.

Nice vid mate! And great web page! Love your work! Cann tell there was a huge effort into getting a kitevid to look like that. Keep em coming. Look forward to the next one.

Yeah, kept the zoom pulled right out wide, but it was the "landscape" setting that stuffed the shutter speed. Next time will ensure it's on "Sport" mode and that should fix the shutter speed problem.

Cheers,

Rob

Thanks surfingboyo, yeah I did all the editing. Its certainly no Andy Gordon masterpiece but all the editing & colour grading etc was done in Final Cut Pro. You could have probably gotten that same result out of most editing software.
