Hahah...I wish...no setup here Lang just the GoPro cliped onto a helmet. If you look more closely at the video Lang you'll notice I was flicking off the sand in readyness to launch the kite when I lost grip and it all went wrong. My original intention was to flick off the sand then stand to the side with my kite well clear then after thumbs up let go of the kite safely. I am hoping for alot of views so that our sport can become more safe. Its a lesson to us all not to become complacent. Even safe people can make mistakes. Thanks for your comment.
^^^good on you for posting it. Besides the slip, you did everything right to correct. you pulled you QR and kept your distance as much as you could to thet the kite fly/die on one line, only then did you untangle the bar from the line.
Ive seen guys set up for a SWester but it is NW. A lot more dangerous.
Good on ya for manning up!!
Best way to learn.
You can tell from the beginning that the fella who is about to have his kite launched is newbie cause he is telling him to walk around to the right part of the window.
I think this was an unfortunate mistake. You can tell he wasnt intending to let go of the kite, he lost his grab. One of the reasons I always grab the kite from within the leading edge. Gives you a real solid hold on the kite.
Also, I agree to never trust even other kiters, unless you know them or can see that they are experienced, with launching your kite. I have had randoms come up to me saying "I know how to launch kites" only to have them do something similar to the 2nd video on me. Having said that, the guy in the second video was not a very good kiter cause instead of just leaving the kite where it was he flew it straight across the window.
That is all
Would you trust someone that say's 'I know how to launch kites", or would you get the bloke that says, "Wanna a launch mate?" to put your kite up for you?.
Thanks for your comment Bigwavedave but I beg to differ. The 2010 Cabrinha - IDS is an absolute depower safety system and is designed to work everytime without fail, so no doubt about it working as it should.
You'll notice in the video that I ran back towards oldmate as he walked forwards thus minimising any tension that may have come on the lines (it work perfectly) besides with only a few seconds to decide on what to do I felt that it would be best to quick release which enabled me to help my friend if he were in trouble, I was relieved to see him well in control of his kite so the only thing left to do was to thread my lines through his and apologize profusely for my stuffup.
It all worked well, as it should, and we were both out enjoying the wind and waves within minutes, I would recommend this method and I also think it's helpful to debate which way is best and so on and so forth because it can only do good for the sport, fellow kiters can see this topic and others like it and hopefully be more prepared for the unexpected.
A correct split second decisions can make the differance between having a great kite session with your mates or going home in an ambulance.
Happy kiting and stay safe.
Cheers Marcus
^^^^ Yes you did, and I noticed from the bar you were flying a Cabrinha, you ran backwards straight away, you know your kite and its limitations, go towards him until the kite was dead and it would have gone pearshaped. IDS flags from a wishbone 5th line (sort of), well done![]()
Ever wondered what other people in other countries think when it comes to Kitesurfing? I know I have so I did a social experiment just to see how fellow kiters in the United States would say about this incident. Besides, no matter where you live, Kiters can learn from this blunder the world over.
Now I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules here and I don't mean to redirect Seabreeze readers elsewhere but if you want to have a quick read then just click on the link and it will take you to Kiteforum.com where I have posted this exact same video (KITE LAUNCH FAIL).
