Yesterday afternoon I was walking on Mermaid Beach when I noticed a guy teaching someone to fly a kite right on the waters edge where all the people tend to walk, as I walked up to him I saw that the kite is about to stall and as I was carrying my infant son I stopped and fair enough the kite came crashing down in direct line where I would have been if I kept on walking. I hate to think what the consequences of this could have been if I got hit with a kite/lines while carrying a little baby! I asked the guy if he was a certified instructor or was a member of AKSA the answer was NO, don't need to be. Turns out he was an instructor, I told him that he shouldn't be teaching in this spot as he's putting other people in danger, teaching bad practices to newbies and one more incident can get us banned with the Council. I told him there is plenty of empty beach 10min. away at The Spit but he told me he was running short of time and didn't seam to think there was any problem, said they've been doing it there for sometime and continued doing what he was doing, I watched him for a while and saw the kite fall out of the sky a few more times.
I think that this sort behavior is totally unacceptable and should be stopped, I also don't understand why a large shop allows it, surely its in their best interest not to get the sport banned from the local beach or maybe they just don't know any better?
Its completely unacceptable to teach anywhere from Main beach to Burleigh as far as I am concerned, the beach is way too busy and narrow with too many flagged areas. This guy sounds like a total liability, well done for having a word, maybe SEQKA need to have a chat with the store owner?
mmmmmmm.
Speaking of teaching people to kite if anyone on the goldy wants to or is interested in teaching give me a call at Roar Industries 0418 722 928. Have i got a deal for you.
Jacko
Hey Jacko maybe you could write down your thoughts on this subject rather than trying to promote your business?
Why? everyone should know my thoughts. Pretty sure they should know better but its not illegal as far as i know. Not promoting my business just trying to give people some work trying to keep this country running.
Who am i to tell another shop where they can or can not teach. I know the lifeguards don't like it but is there some thing saying you can not teach on the beaches if there is i would like to see it.
I don't teach there but if they have got insurance to cover stupid teaching practices then i guess they are going to do it.
Every time its windy there are people all the way up and down the coast teaching and learning on the beaches at the end of the day i would rather see some one get a lesson on the beach than no lesson at all.
Yes i'm sure people will get hit by kites, siht in the last three week i've heard of 6 people hitting people walking past and these are not all learners also seen people trying to kite in tally creek with a 14m kite and this is only what i have seen or been told about image all the other siht that goes on.
You say write down my thoughts there are some of them but i would rather just keep doing what I'm doing and not get involved in this type of ****. No one in the MOFO club really bothers with politics. We just kite, SUP,and pay our member ship(a carton) when its due.
If you're looking for some one to jump on the safety band wagon i'm sure there heaps of people who will.
Any way have to go to work in my shop Roar Industries
No one sticks their head in the sand and i go well out of my way to make sure where i kite we don't need signs and siht like that. Yes i kite ,sup sorry no drinking beer at the moment (in training) but still make sure i pay my membership to the MOFO's.
Try and see what happens if shops don't do lessons!!!
Obviously you know nothing otherwise you would know that i do more than my fair share to look after kiting on the goldy. Yes i do own a shop but what i am is a kiter and SUP'er first i have no interest in getting rich just enjoying what i do. The only time i wish i didnt kite is when people such as yourself who know nothing, but think they know it all. So don't you drink at all? skirt too tight? i'm about having fun in the sun

love'n it
Jezz any one would think i teach on the beach with the way half guys go off.
And yes i'm sucking at this quoting thing!!!!
No offense paul.j you sound like a good dude, but you are just missing the point and it is getting annoying.
Mate the issue being raised is that it is stupid to just say "hey, each to his own, im just loving the sport" when people are doing things that could lead to a kiting ban.
Yes people have to learn, and it is much better to take lessons at a bad spot than teach yourself at a bad spot.. But it is better to have these lessons at a good safe spot.
This should be important to every kiter and especially to a shop owner because councils ban kiters from using beaches all the time! look at whats happening at byron for example.
peace, and good winds![]()
^^ dude... seriously... what point? you have none and it is getting annoying.
Why would paul do something?? What the hell is paul gonna do about the problem?? its not his role to fix this sort of problem and by no means should you expect him to.
YOU have as much power to fix this problem as him.
How about you direct your stupid posts at the source of the problem.. the shop that actually employs this so called rookie??.... nah, that would make far to much sense.
RABBLE. smiley
WOAH ![]()
i guess as a representative of the kite industry you'd expect a more moderate response wouldn't you.
Personally i don't know paulj don't know what he does and frankly DGAF.
Well i would hate to keep annoying you so I'm sitting here with my favorite drink having a read and thinking I'm not really in to sucking up to make friends, i do what i do and it works for me and where i kite. No one has said what this shop is doing is a good thing but there are worse things happening than some one teaching on the beach. Like the dciks who don't get a lesson, so i am getting the point that i want to, maybe you don't agree, i don't care.
Yes your right the lesson would be better in the broadwater but hey that's where i do mine and nothing i say to another shop is going to change their mind so to me you guys are dribbling!!!
If all you guys are so in to doing the right thing then join AKSA and make a difference instead of trying to bag some one who dose make a difference(that's me).
So i guess all you guys who are so good will be going in to this shop and asking them to stop teaching on the beaches the or will you just hide on the forum?
Hey PR
I'm not here to win friends, i don't know why i'm on the kiting forum at all as everyone knows it all here anyway.
In my experience in kiting the ones who preach safety all the time are usually the worse when it gets to the beach.
P.s still need instructors
ok all you safety people out there, ask yourself this " Do you shop in a shop that sell's kites to people without lessons first?"
It's our policy at Roar that we wont sell a kite to someone without a lesson.
That is the way to get the sport safer.
Paul J
Im giving lessons tomorrow in front of the mall at surfers paradise.
Only $20 an hour,bargin.
You must supply your own gear.Look on Ebay, there is heaps of really cheap 2002 model kites.
If there is alot of people on the beach they will soon move,or we will clear a path through them real quick.![]()

Some of you guys have really missed my point, all I was trying to say was that, as fry 86 said "we as kiters on this forum and on the beach (if we ever see it happening) should have a word with the guys doing things on the beach that could jeopardize kiting there for all... " A major shop such as Kamikaze Kites should first of all tell learners to stay away from busy beaches!!! Check out what sort of crap they are promoting on their youtube account, this is the same guy that was teaching
So has anyone got a crack in their rail on this topic LOL!
I heard seacarter is gonna have 3 cracks!
XX Angie
ps, Seriously we need kite instructors at Roar industries.
pps, Poor rel, that really does look like Jacko falling off the chair, he said he's been in training.
Have many of you guys and girls read the windsurfing forums. I am only new to this sport, but there is not bagging out and carryon in the windsurf forums.
However it is a good laugh to read the kiting forums.
Was talking to a mate of mine bout the two different disciplines. He did mention after he saw a kiter get dragged for 50m that the kiters really should put signs up when they are out, warning people of the dangers.
I was going to take kiting up but it looked a bit too dangerous for me. And I didnt like the guys calling me a "Gumby".![]()
