Yes August -> October are good times to kite in Indonesia. In Bali, you'll be probably be kiting in Sanua, but the best place to stay is Seminyak (Great Restaurants and Bars). In the Gilli's, Gilli Air is the best place to kite. Gilli T, is the best place to party. Would recommend staying at Gilli Meno or Gilli Air, unless your backpacker, then Gilli T :)

+1 for Gili Air . Contact Stephano at Gili Air Kitesurfing ... google it . I was there just for a day trip ( was doing a surf trip on Lombok) last Oct and had a good kite session.. hired some gear from Stephano .. Bintangs on the beach afterward. overall was really good fun... I would highly recommend check out the Gilis .. was fantastic ! I prob wouldn't take kite gear .. was pretty cheap to hire .. I think around $75 aussie. I got no idea about March conditions.

I went to both in late September / early October last year. In Seminyak the wind was at the most 16kts in the afternoons, and the surf was rough as guts - 6ft plus. Definitely not kiter friendly, unless you're a pro with a bigger than 12m kite. Sanur was OK as it's sheltered but again, wind was light. Lots of other boats & hazards on the water.

Gili T the wind was a tad stronger, maybe up to 20kts in the afternoons most days. But for the first 200m off the beach at high tide the water is less than 1m deep with razor sharp reef below - which gets completely exposed at low tide. Beyond that, if you can make it out there are strong currents. I wouldn't kite there.

Didnt go to Gili Air so cant comment.

There's got to be better kiting destinations than Bali, surely?

Yeah I wouldnt kite at Seminyak, Looks rough as, but its only a short/cheap 25 minute cab to Sanua for kiting. Sanua is only good for kiting, not staying, as its boring as fk. I had great wind in Sanua, took my 12m and was up riding almost every arvo. Its situated in 7km Lagoon, so gets some good wind, but not overly choppy. Some great youtube vids on the location/kiting.

Thanks for all the recomendations about kite Bali. It looks like we should not bring our equipment all the way, and maybe only go for surfing instead, or hire kite equipment if the wind comes?

I've heard that on the north western tip of bali,Gilimanuk (3 hours from kuta) the wind is much stronger eg 20-25 knots when only 15 at sanur(the venturi effect), but it is only flat water.

North-West Bali season start only around July all the way till November..

All infos in my web site you can google it!
Gili Air is the place to go.
March is no wind unless a typhoon build around North Australia and then we can get some nice westerly (but very rare!).
