hey all, headed to victor harbour to hang with the in laws from Friday for 2 weeks, so understandably very keen to kite. Anyone know if you can just take a regular surfboard board bag(far king fits a 7'3), chuck in a twintip and kite (12m) plus harness some clothes and fold the nose of the bag down and tape down. Fly friday on virgin, anyone know if I will be hit with excess baggage or if this will even work? Super keen to kite if the wind is up at all Down that way. Thanks

Why not check their website for their "excess baggage" policy?

I've noticed that the airlines have given up on policing "sports equipment" and you can pack whatever you like, up to size & weight limits eg. you give up your suitcase for a board bag. So sounds like you should be able to get away with it but start with checking the website.

They also spaz out less if you pre-book larger bags...

I travel with my surfboard, 6m, 9m, harness, bar, wetty and boardies in a similar size surfboard bag. Weighs in at 24kg usually. Has been fine with Qantas, Air Mauritius, Emirates. I just say it is 'windsurfing gear' as it is easier that way. Carry on backpack with a change of clothes and you're set!

...and ya pump of course! I put the kites in a pillowcase each and cut a pool noodle in half and then slice lengthwise to put on the rails for protection, and wrap the wetty around the harness hook.

Yeah it airline dependant and status as well.
I know Qantas give you a standard 30kg but if you Silver of above your aloud an additional 17 kg,. Crazy Hey 47kg.

Generally I can cram everything into one bag and scrape under 30, two surfboards, two kites and all the other miscellaneous rubbish that you need.
Hope you have fun.

We usually fly with virgin domestically and they have a $35 excess piece fee as long as it's under 23 kilos. We managed 2 kites, 2 twin tips, and a travel bag at 23.5kg.
Book an extra bag before you go.

nice thanks for all the replies, checked online seems virgin is up to 32kg 1.8-3m long depending on plane if you pre-purchase for oversize/fragile items. I was hoping to get it on as standard baggage as i will only have a twin tip, 1 kite, bar harness and pump, wont take the surfboards. Was going to tape the nose of the board bag (standard boardbag not travel bag) down so it is only 140cm and chuck some clothes in the nose bit. Hopefully cram anything over the standard 23 kg into wife or kids bag (wife dependant). Almost not worth the hassle but if there are a few windy days in the harbour or at middleton i will be spewing if i dont bring some gear. goodwinds for the holidays and merry Christmas!

Kent Reserve is a great place to Kite in Vitor Harbor , otherwise head to Day street in Middleton.

I went a couple of years ago to visit family and was glad i took the gear,

Had a 5ft board and strapped it to my regular kite bag , flew Virgin and it went in as oversize.

Because i didn't put the board in a bag , just removed the fins , I think the baggage handlers took a bit more care as they could see it was fragile.
