Things have been moving along for next years nationals at Phillip Island - we had wanted to make an official announcement before Christmas, the permits are still under application with the council.
We will get back with confirmation shortly in the new year.
The dates are 1-9 March - a few states have the Labour day public holiday so this should make blocking off time from work a bit easier.
The event will also be combined with the wavesailing nationals and a local SUP Vic event so there will be plenty going on.
To give you an idea of the conditions at Phillip Island - there are a huge number of beaches on different angles so nearly every wind direction is covered. These beaches offer a variety of beach and reef breaks. Feb/March typically offers a mix of South Easterly seabreezes - cross to cross off on the beach breaks - and frontal systems which light up the reefs. Typically it will be Port tack this time of year, although there are a heap of starboard tack options as well.
The open beaches towards Woolamai pick up heaps of swell so you are pretty well guaranteed waves year round. Here are a couple of pics from March this year showing some of the breaks around the island. Stay posted for another update soon.
The plan is to run kiting and wavesailing in the one event. Certain conditions may favor one discipline over the other so hopefully they can run at different times. Worst case scenario we might have to run them simultaneously.

Some shots of flynns reef and a recent sup session at right point
Great wind direction and kite position for some good surfing...
Looks pretty offshore to me.
Hey mate, it was cross/cross off as it blew off the point that day at Flynns. Its cool though as it is in a bay, and if something happens; you'll blow in on the other side.
Phillip Island has so many options; you can usually find somewhere to suit most days.
Am going to put in for leave the first day back from the new year break!!!
Are you guys planning to run it over 9 days? Would you consider running the kite event over e.g. over 1 of the weekend or so, or will it be both windsurfing and kites at the same time. Just wondering as we will find it hard to get 10 days of that time of year.
We had some great kites on Phillip island and Torquay over summer so really hope we can make it down.
Hi everyone,
I'm really sorry to say but the kiting aspect of the event has been cancelled due to issues organising suitable safety support/insurance etc.
It is disappointing for everyone involved as we would have loved to have a big crew enjoying the wind and waves of Phillip Island.
There has been quite a lot of interest though and it is a great spot - we are hopeful that a dedicated kiting event can be organised towards the tail end of the year.
If anyone would like to get involved in making this happen please feel free to PM me and we will see what can be organised in the future.
Apologies, Al
Hey Ali,
sorry to hear that you had to cancel the kiting portion of the event. We had the wave nats up here at Middle Rock back in 2007(?) and i'd be happy to get involved organising it in this area but i've no experience organising an event of this size. Send me a PM if you're keen.
