My Brother in-law went kiting for the first time in 2 years yesterday, Was doing great, after about 20minutes did a nice little jump near the beach, not sure what happened next but looked up to see his kite float to the ground with a massive tear /hole through it.
Is there any insurance (home contents) that would cover this or do you have to get a more specific Kite related insurance.
I thought this topic had been covered but couldnt find it on here.
Any help would be great to pass onto him.
I was just glad he did it 10m from the shore not the 100s he was out about 3minutes before.
Gear breaks all the time.
You could simply go to your local kite repairer and get the kite fixed like everyone else does - unless you enjoy making several phone calls, waiting patiently to fill out paperwork and driving around town to get three quotes.
There is no way in the world that you will cover kite gear for damages with an insurance company just grin and bear it. It's hard enough to get it covered for theft on a home insurance policy and what ever you do don't mention it on a life or income protection policy. Just my 2 cents worth.
Most Home insurance will cover kite gear if listed as specific sports/special items but only covers "when not in use". A significant tear from LE to TE is about $100 to fix more if the bladders knackered, probably less than the excess on the insurance anyway.
you can take extra sports equipment cover on your home and content insurance for theft and accidental damage. Even though you are not covered while the equipment is in use, if (let's say) you carry your kite through your backyard, and it accidently falls out of your hands and there was a sharp object on the floor which happend to tear it, then you can have this covered. I had my board accidentaly damaged, and had received a new one. Only thing is they typically have a limit (i.e. up to certain amount, possibly 1500-1600 bucks)... so if your kite is worth more, then not sure if it's worth it... depends on the damage i suppose.
