Almost didn't make it to see 2014. There was only a 3 day old newbie on the beach so I decided it was safer to self-land. Just as it was settling a gust swirled (Pelican Pt) and my kite shot off. Went straight across the power window.
I got flung onto the beach before my kite stopped up in a tree. I probably should have pulled my safety the moment it took off again but thought it should be ok. Strangely enough, I think that tree saved my life. It was even nice enough to give me back my kite without so much as a pin prick. Fark!!!

fark self landing at that place all ways hectic with wind swirls, lull's and gusts on the grass, if I was last man standing id just flag the kite out over the water seen too many eaten by the tree.
I've seen that happen so many times at Pelican Point. The wind is fluky in the launch/land area. Trees have eaten my kite and I was dragged feet first into the wall once when my foot got tangled in my safety line.
Pelican Point looks gentle but its definitely not for beginners.

I would say he had a BOW movement after pulling the qr . glad you made it . Yep I am with others if it is a just a little suspect get into knee deep and flag it . The only way to be safe .
Live today to kite another .
I'm sick of hearing about people kooking out and nearly dying.. You made a crap decision, and you paid the price.
Self landing at pelican point = plain stupidity
You were quick to pay out on the guy that needed rescuing a few weeks back..
If you were smarter you wouldn't be attempting a self land at peli.. Or even bother kiting there full stop
^ Seriously, are people scared to get their kites wet these days? When i was learning ( or more of a noob than i am now) and i found myself in a position where there was no one nearby to land me i would always pop my safety well in the water and walk up the lines. Easy, safe and gets you used to pulling your safety. Hell, i still do it if i'm not 100% comfortable with the conditions. Self landing at Peli or Melville is asking for trouble.
Just wondering why you would flag out in the water??
I self land all the time in the water and no need to flag out?? Just do it exactly the same as on land and run up your flagging lines and grab the kite??

If you are comfortable with that then do it, i never liked having the lines loose around me in the water. If you kook up on land self landings you will probably kook up using the same method in the water, in which case play it safe and pull the safety. Also never hurts to give your safety a go now and then.
flung on the beach and kite not damaged...
not exactly a near death experience - no broken ribs, lost bark or shredded kite, not even a mouth full of sand..... just sounds like another one of the self-landing learning sessions
You stuffed up your landing and got your arse handed to you.... Nearly died I think not....
Sorry but you need to put it in the right context. We have had some very serious injuries and a death over the last 12 months. You had a bad day out, suck it up and learn from your mistakes...

Guys practice to pull that quick release, its easy and quick and make sure the QR works!
You are likely to get as far as the first impact with the sand to push the release - after that there are no guarantees - broken arm, head impact?
This guy was one of the many lucky ones. The dead ones may have thought they would sort it out, as did many of the live ones.
I probably should have pulled my safety the moment it took off again but thought it should be ok.
Yeah, probably eh
so what in your wealth of experience made you think it should be ok?
QR is the first reaction you should have, not the last. Yet again QED.

I personally believe self landing and self launching should be covered in the progressions when learning to kite. It is something you are inevitably going to do at some point and we are all left either learning from word of mouth or watching badly made You Tube videos to learn how to do it. If the proper education was there around self landing and launching and when and when not to attempt it I think there would be a lot less kitetastrophies. Of course common sense at the end of the day is going to make the biggest difference which unfortunately is in short supply a lot of the time. Simple rule???.."If in doubt DON'T!"
